Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2009
There is a reason this recipe has five stars!! Amazing! I almost didn't make it because I didn't have a full 1/2 cup of butter. But I read the reviews, and decided to go for it, and subbed a couple of tablespoons of oil for the missing butter. It was still the best cornbread I have ever tasted. This is dangerous good. :)

Five Minute Ice Cream

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2009
This is pretty great. I used up my leftover half and half and frozen strawberries - even added a little vanilla coffee creamer b/c I did not have quite enough half and half. I used less than half the sugar and it is PERFECT. This is dangerous! I can't wait to try other combos.

Colonial Brown Bread

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2009
Despite the word "sweet" in the descriptor line, I did not expect this to be as sweet as it is. It is rather tasty - next time I'll cut some of the sugar and try for a more savory version. As is, this was a great tea bread with honey butter, or jam, or made into a decadant french toast.

Michael's Foccacia Bread

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2009
As written, this is a good recipe. I can already tell - this will be a five star recipe with a few modifications. I agree with the other reviewers that having more of the "good stuff" mixed into the bread will really kick this up a notch. More herbs and cheese in the bread - I'm thinking about carmelizing the onions next time, and adding that with some roasted garlic and maybe a soft cheese like brie to the bread dough. Mmmm - this is a great base to experiment though!

Spicy Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2009
This was great. I actually forgot to add the oil and lemon and it was still wonderful - and rather healthy, since I used lite coconut milk. I just rough chopped the onions and ginger, scooped out the cooked potato, and pureed the whole finished product in my food processer. YUM.

Pineapple Upside-down Cake Martinis

These were mighty yummy. Perhaps my friends and I are getting too old - but they also held quite a kick! I might take advice and "water" them down with some additional juice - cranberry or some other mixer.

These are, quite simply, amazing. I'm glad I made them to give away, otherwise I'd eat them all myself!

Red Velvet Cupcakes

Reviewed: May 22, 2009
These were a huge hit at my office. I made them as directed with whipped cream cheese frosting (my fav) from this site. I don't even like red velvet normally, and even I enjoyed one of these. I'll be making them again.

Dad's Cookies

Reviewed: May 1, 2009
First of all, listen to the recipe and form the dough into WALNUT sized balls! I used my traditional tablespoon sized cookies and they spread like crazy and ran together. Not a huge problem, but now I have giant cookies. Good thing they're so tasty - I don't think anyone will mind eating a huge one! I made these with dried cranberries. Next time I'll add a little cinnamon or cardamom - but they are great as they are.

Cheddar Pear Pie

This was amazing. I made it with combination of two types of pears and some granny smith apples. Next time, I might even make it as a crumble/crisp because the crust was not even needed!

I was not a huge fan of the cornmeal in this pie crust. It came together really well for me, and I will try it again without the cornmeal.

Papa Drexler's Bavarian Pretzels

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2009
These are FANTASTIC. And easy to make. And addictive. And therefore, very dangerous! I have made lots of soft pretzel recipes, and this is my favorite yet. Simple, yet tasty. I also made the same recipe into 8 good sized pretzels. One tip - the recipe did not call for a greased pan, so I didn't add any butter or oil to the pan before baking. When I tried to take the hot pretzels off, they stuck. After taking a couple off minus the bottoms, I decided to let them cool ON the pan. this worked much better. I will be making these tasty things again.

Whole Wheat Banana Nut Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2009
While this does not compare to my old family recipe - lots of white sugar, white flour, oil - this is an amazing banana bread, especially considering how healthy it is. It is easy to add other flowers (I subbed a little flax meal, soy flour, and protein powder with good results.) I did not have any nuts, so left them out - but next time I would likely add some raisins, cranberries, and/or chopped up apple. Could use a little texture/extra sweetness. I will be making this again.

Exquisite Yeastless Focaccia

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2009
This was tasty. Not like traditional focaccia, but yummy all the same. I topped mine with carmalized onions, garlic, and feta cheese. It was not hard at all as other reviewers mentioned. Maybe they made it too thin? I followed recipe, and it did not cover the entire bottom of the pan. I could have made it in an 8x8 and filled it edge to edge.

Rich Chocolate Frosting

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2008
This is pretty tasty. I halved the recipe, and as other reviewers said, that was MORE than enough for a 9' two layer cake. I divided the recipe - adding chocolate to part (about 2/3) and leaving the rest white for piping. I found that I needed to add more vanilla extract to the whole recipe for flavor, and even using less sugar than called for, it was too sweet for me. I added a touch of almond extract to the chocolate mix, which added a nice touch (some sort of liquor would also be nice -but I didn't have on hand.) But this is a tasty icing. I put it on the Too Much Chocolate Cake - and we'll see tomorrow if everyone dies of sugar overload. :)

Mmmm I am a fan! I didn't have rye flour, so used ww with a little buckwheat and flax mixed in. I also used almond milk instead of the soy. Then I mixed some frozen blueberries in and topped with real maple syrup. YUM.

Cinnamon Pear Frozen Yogurt

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2008
I love it when something this simple is so tasty! I made this with three fresh peaches, pureed with a little vanilla, about half the sugar, and non fat yogurt. I'm already working on other variations in my head. In playing with recipes - I'd advise that you keep it "healthy" with fruit based recipes. IE - adding one whole banana and fresh vanilla beans is excellent. However, sweeter additions - I tried peanut butter cups - seem to clash with the tart/sour flavor of the yogurt.

Low-Fat Blue Cheese Dressing

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2008
This is good. I think there is a little too much onion for my taste. (Most reviewers said garlic, but I added a whole clove, and tastes properly garlicy.) I used a sweet vidiala onion too - I'd cut that in half (or less) next time. I also added a bit more blue cheese than called for (wrecking the low-fat part!) and added black pepper and a tiny bit of dill to the finished recipe. I will probably continue to play with this recipe.
