If left to myself I'd neither cook nor eat much at all, but I love to cook for others, and enjoy eating together too. My little girl is the most important person in my world (her daddy too) and family in general is very important to me. I don't cook or eat any mammals but I still eat poultry and fish. I prefer to eat little meat and often scale down the amounts I use to stretch what I buy of it.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook all kinds of ethnic foods and special holiday meals. I hate baking because I don't know enough about it yet to improvise as I'd like. I love grilling and sauteeing in the summer and roasting and trying to bake in the winter.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Almost every Friday since my daughter was born we have gone out to my grandparents farm for dinner. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive up north for my daughter and me, but it's worth it. My mother and my sister meet us there and we all cook a big farm dinner (at lunchtime when it was traditionally served). My grandfather preps on his cutting board at the table while we crowd into the kitchen to cook. My grandmother makes what she can ahead of time and them conducts the whole affair. My mother, sister and I set the dinning room table, stir the pots and bake the bread while my daughter loves to help how ever she can. After we have eaten all three courses (salad, main course, and desert) we clear the table, put up the leftovers, and do up the dishes. My little one is already learning to enjoy the hussle and bustle of cooking and cleaning together and the importance of family. She can hardly wait to get out to Papa and Gigi's farm to do it all again next week.
My cooking tragedies
When I first moved out on my own I decided to make chocolate brownies from scratch. I found a good recipe and dug in. Unfortunately I was out of vegetable oil, so I thought that since olives were like a vegetable I could use olive oil in the brownies. They were absolutely disgusting, but in an odd turn of events, they were eaten up at a party we had the next night. It just goes to show that you shouldn't drink and eat.
