Indian Cauliflower

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2010
My cauliflower needed a further 5 minutes 'help' in the microwave to ensure that it was cooked to al dente. I agree that it does look pretty, but the sauce seemed rather 'flat'

Pumpkin Loaf

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2010
My loaf turned out very very heavy, but I think this is probably my error, as so many others have made great loaves. Re-reading the recipe, I believe I may have beaten the mixture too much - I did quite a bit more than 'stir enough just to moisten'.

Great recipe - worked really well. I do wish that people would stop rating a recipe badly, when they haven't actually followed the instructions, or even used the ingredients as recommended

Sara's Pumpkin Pie

Yummy! This smelt absolutely wonderful cooking. Unfortunately we were too stuffed to eat this for dessert yesterday, but it made a fantastic breakfast with coffee, and great elevensies snacks and I'm looking forward to another piece before bed!

Great Pumpkin Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 21, 2010
This afternoon I made 20 cookies, this evening I have to make 20 cookies. From the initial sneer when the children arrived home from school, it didn't take long for them and their friends to demolish the plate! I used chopped brazil nuts in place of the walnuts, and forgot the raisins! I think I will try dried cranberries in place of raisins in this evenings batch. Great cookies - perhaps somebody will decorate them too!

Yummo! Voted a definite yes by the visiting multitudes of children, aged 9-13. Tripled the recipe and very little washing up needed!

Lunch Box Hot Hot Dogs

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2010
I thought this was a good idea, but our sausages had gone a bit soggy by lunchtime. Thank you so much Purple Hippie for your tip of cooking the sausages, wrapping them in foil and then adding to a warmed, but waterless thermos. Perfect!

Minced Beef with Black-Eyed Beans

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
Very tasty, but a bit too greasy for my taste. I would advocate caution in adding the first 1\4 cup of water. My oil was too hot and we had a very exciting few minutes of hot spitting fat! We will definitely make this again, but would probably only use 1 or 2 tablespoons of oil. Even using lean beef mince a lot of extra oil is generated. We served this with rice, stir fried swiss chard (with garlic and soy sauce) and the Easy Chickpea Curry on site. Great supper - thank you!

Easy Chickpea Curry

Absolutely delicious. I didn't add any sour cream, as I didn't have any, but it tasted wonderful without it. Even my pulse-hating 13 year old son came back for second helpings!

Chocolate Cornstarch Pudding

Oh my goodness! I have just made this as an emergency lunch pudding. My daughter has had to be prised away from the saucepan! Absolutely fab - thank you!

Quick Mix Spritz

These are yummy. I made them with all butter, minus the almond extract (allergies). I also added red food colouring and made them into little heart cookies for the school Valentine's cake fair tomorrow. If they disappear as quickly as the tray I made for home testing, they will be a complete success!

Fluffy Haddock and Potato Pie

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2010
Yum - comfort food at its best. I substituted some salmon fillets for half the haddock, and some prawns - clearing the freezer nicely! We also popped in a handful of sweetcorn and swapped the Emmental for Cheddar, as the fridge dictates. All gobbled up from youngest to eldest, with extra children.

Best Bread Machine Bread

Oh my goodness! After a break of a couple of years and two disasters this morning, I discovered this recipe. I'm never going back! Delicious bread. I added an extra 1/ tsp of salt and used olive oil instead of vegetable (as I'd used it up on the other disasters)!

Old-Fashioned Pink Lemonade

Great recipe - just right for an Alice in Wonderland tea party! I will try bottled lemon juice next time - to have to use 10 cold lemons in England in December to get 2 cups worth is just too much!

Apple Betty

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
I made the crumb topping in my food processor, but found there was too much butter, so it amalgamated into a kind of gloop! I added another 1/2 cup of flour and gave it another burst - fab crumbs! The topping ended up rather too crunchy, but I guess this is due to my extra flour. Next time I will just reduce the butter in the first place. The taste is great - I used English Bramley apples and didn't need any extra sugar.

Hmmm, interesting! Lovely taste, maybe they need an overnight session in the fridge to really firm them up. Thank you - will experiment a bit more!

Cheesy Bacon Muffins

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2008
Great flavour (I followed Isis's idea of reducing the sugar, swapping cayenne for paprika and increasing the cheese). Baked in 24 mini-muffin cases for 15 mins, but with several mid-tin casualties! The unburnt ones around the edges were lovely - and scoffed in minutes with vegetable soup.

A to Z Everything-but-the-Kitchen-Sink Chocolate Chip Cookies

We made 1/2 quantity for my daughter to take to school. Unfortunately as there are several nut allergies, we were slightly restricted in our ingredient choice. However, we used Fruit & Fibre cereal (minus the nuts) and Golden Nuggets cereal, in place of the nuts and cornflakes. Not sure how many we will have left to take to school tomorrow! Yummy!

Gypsy Tart

Fantastic! This was an English school lunch dessert in the 1970's. A winner every time and a very true representation of a wonderful childhood memory. Don't worry that it seems very 'wobbly' at the end of the cooking time - it will set. However, it is at its very best if it oozes a little when cut!

Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding

Lovely! I made this with chocolate bread. Adults ate it hot and children cold with vanilla ice-cream. To prove how well it went down with 3 very fussy small children (two 6 year-olds and one two year-old) they fought over the leftovers!
