Grad Afternoon
About this Cook
I love cooking, and entertaining. I find it relaxing and rewarding to spend the afternoon in my kitchen, creating wonderful smells and flavours.
My favorite things to cook
I like baking and cooking almost anything. Chicken is a favorite in our house, so I experiment a lot with different sauces, fillings, seasoning and cooking methods. I also really enjoy italian style foods (pastas, meat sauces, herbed breads, ect), so I try alot of different recipies like that. My boyfriend has a big sweet tooth, so trying new desserts is also an important part of our menu.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Food in general is a really big tradition in my family. I come from a long line of really great cooks. Christmas is always a huge deal in my family, and for the past 6 or 7 years, it has become tradition for my dad to make a Tur-Duck-In, (Turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, stuffed with a de boned chicken, and a different kind of stuffing between each layer. Yummy!) We have anywhere from 18-26 guests for that usually. We are lucky enough to live on an island, surrounded by amazing sea food, so during the summer months, huge fire pits in the back yard with fresh crab, salmon, prawns, and sometimes scallops are not at all uncommon. My dad is also the king of Prime Rib, so we often have get togethers with frinds and family and enjoy huge, thick slabs of juicy prime rib with yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, and fresh veggies.
My cooking triumphs
I'm great at comming up with my own recipies. I'm quite creative when it comes to food. I can think up recipies in my head, and for the most part, they usually work! I also have a knack for reading a recipe and seeing right away what would make it better. Unless I'm baking, I almost never follow a recipe completely. One of the cooking experiences that stands out most in my mind, is my sister in laws wedding of about 150 people last summer. My boyfriends family and I made all the food. I had so much fun, and it was a great learning experience. Up to that point, and I was use to cooking for much smaller groups of people, only 15-20. I had a blast doing that!
My cooking tragedies
Once, when I made butter tarts for Christmas I forgot the butter. Whoops!

Oven Baked BBQ Ribs
These were AMAZING! I skipped the braising (I was too lazy) and added about 1/2 cup of diced celery. I didn't bother with the basting. Just poured all the sauce over them, covered and cooked for 2 hours, uncovered and cooked for another hour. This is my new favorite recipe!

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie
These are delicious! I used 1 cup whole wheat flour and 1 cup white. I also used 2 entire eggs. Turned out perfectly!

Asian Lettuce Wraps
I used this as a rough idea just to follow. All I had were Romain Hearts, so we used those. They worked perfectly. I lift out the water chestnuts. Added celery and cabbage, used a mixture of what I had on hand for the seasoning/spices. Turned out AMAZING! I will for sure be making them again.
