About this Cook
I'm 24 years old and a stay at home mom to an outgoing 5 year old little girl. My husband is a CH-47 Chinook helicopter engineer and we just returned to the United States after living in the Netherlands for a few years. I love music, word games, spades, the beach, laughing and trying out new recipes. While living here in Holland, I've discovered that there are a lot of ingredients that are called for in various recipes, that just aren't offered here. I am definitely challenged each time I set out to try a new recipe. Sometimes I have to go with a substitution; sometimes I have to find a recipe for an ingredient that's called for, and other times I have to simply have my family import certain products for me so that I can have them on hand. All in all, I'm always up for trying new things!
My favorite things to cook
I have no favorites; I'm always up for trying new recipes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
As with many people, the age-old "licking the batter from the spoon" rite of passage has now been passed to my daughter.
My cooking triumphs
Oh I've had many! Living overseas and not having your "normal" choice of items that you are so accustomed to in your own country, proves to be a triumph each time a new dish is prepared.
My cooking tragedies
Thankfully, I've not had any yet!

Summer Beer II
I really wish someone would have given info of some sort about what kind of beer to use considering not all are equal. I ended up using an actual Sam Adams Summer Beer. I added a bit of sugar as the overall flavor was not as sweet as I would have hoped for. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this! As others have stated, this is indeed the perfect summer gathering beverage!

Black-Eyed Pea Gumbo
Yum. I omitted the bell pepper as I can't stand them, and decided at the last minute to use 3 cans of black-eyed peas and 1 can of field peas just to give it a little toss up in flair. Everything else was as written and I thought the dish was very good. I had trouble getting the brown rice to cook thoroughly, despite giving it extra time and liquid to cook. I seem to have that problem with most dishes involving rice so next time I'll just use my rice cooker and cook the rice completely and toss it into the mix. I made this a second time and added cooked ground turkey for a more satisfying meal. With or without the ground turkey, my family loved it. Thanks for a great addition to our family menu!

Yellow Squash Casserole
The eggs absolutely ruined this. This isn't a casserole; it's a glorified soufflé.
