Hot Buttered Rum Batter

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2009
As other reviewers stated, this recipe makes A LOT! That's okay with me, because it's so good! Children and non-drinkers can enjoy this without the rum. Also, you can add the batter to your morning coffee for a treat. I use two tablespoons of batter (sometimes three) per 8 ounces of boiling water. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing!

Amazingly Good Eggnog

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2009
Oh. My. Goodness. This is heavenly! I know that the holidays are busy, and the last thing I need is another itme on my "to do" list, but... I think I'm going to have to make this eggnog a Christmas tradition! All three kids agree that it's better than storebought. Even my non-eggnog-drinker enjoyed it. This is a "must try" recipe. I goofed and added whole eggs rather than yolks. The eggs curdled, but a quick whirl in the blender took care of that little problem. I subbed a split vanilla bean for the 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract in the first step. I couldn't find light cream, but half and half seemed to work fine. I didn't add rum because of the kids, but guests could add rum according to their tastes at serving. Unfortunately, this eggnog won't be around long enough for guests to enjoy! Merry Christmas!

Hot Jezebel

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2009
Very good. I used apricot preserves, but apricot/pineapple preserves work well, too. People either love it or hate it, but most will love it. It's a nice change of pace from regular dips and spreads. It's a snap to prepare, which is great! I serve it with buttery crackers.

Gimlet

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2009
I agree that gin and lime are a great combination! The gimlet is one of my favorite cocktails. This one is way too sweet for me, even without the added sugar. I usually use 1 sweetened lime juice and two parts gin. When I have fresh limes on hand, I like to use 2 oz. gin, 1/2 oz. Rose's, and 3/4 z. fresh lime juice.

Outrageous Warm Chicken Nacho Dip

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2009
Very good! I didn't add the jalapenos because of the kids, but I think this would be out of this world with a little extra "heat"! This is so easy and tastes great! It was a little thin (maybe because I used 2% cheese), so I added some shredded cheddar. Serve with corn chips or tortillas. YUM!

Shirley Temple

A very good drink, but maybe a little too sweet for some. I like this best with ginger ale, and sometimes with a little OJ, as well. If you're feeling naughty, add a splash of vodka or gin. Enjoy!

Spooky Witches Fingers

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2009
Oh my! These are so easy and soooo spooky! Even my 7-year-old was able to make the creepy little digits! The dough was the consistency of playdough, so it was very easy to work with. The cookies are similar to butter cookies. I was out of almond flavoring, o I used extra vanilla. The almond would definitely put them over the top! They're not overly sweet and aren't the best cookies I've tasted, but the presentation more than makes up for that. I used sliced almonds and tinted the dough green. Amazing! I can't wait to see the reactions I get when I serve these tonight.

Cake Balls

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
I really wanted to like these! I made them for a retirement luncheon at work, and I'm not even going to take them. These are just mushy, soggy blobs of cake dipped in chocolate. They are way too sweet and the texture is just strange. I would've given only 1 star, but the kids did eat them. I wish I had taken the time to read some of the negative reviews first. This recipe is way too much work for mediocre at best) results. Sorry.

Hot Pepper Cheese Ball

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2009
Pretty good. I added a 4 oz. can of chopped jalapenos for a little heat. It was much, much hotter the next day, so be careful when adding jalepenos! I didn't have the Worcestershire, but I didn't worry about it as several reviewers thought it was overpowering or cut it back a little. I think I'll pop it in the oven next time with the pecans on top.

Gin and Tonic

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2009
The gin and tonic... Two ingredients that many folks love to hate! I, however, enjoy the flavor of gin, and I'm learning to appreciate tonic water. I recommend staying away from diet tonic, though! Yuck! A good rule of thumb is 1 part gin to two parts tonic. Add a squeeze of lemon (or lime, if you prefer). I think the tablespoon of lime juice and wedge of lime are a bit much for me. Like another reviewer, I've also tried this with a splash of Rose's sweetened lime juice instead. Refreshing!

Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2009
I had some mint-infused simple syrup in the fridge for mojitos, so I thought I'd give this a try. Of course it's strong... Anyone can see that by reading the recipe. Mint juleps are supposed to be that way, so use a nice, smooth sippin' bourbon. I used Early Times this time around and, although technically not "bourbon", it was great! Another reviewer mentioned adding a bit of tea, and I think that sounds really refreshing! Time for another sip...

Fresh-Squeezed Salty Dog

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2009
Love, love, love this cocktail! So simple. I used 1/2 grapefruit, a teaspoon af simple syrup, and a jigger of gin. I salted the rim with coarse salt. Perfect! I think I'll have a double next time! I enjoy the taste of gin, but the drink works equally well with vodka. The grapefruit hides the alcohol taste, so be careful not to drink too much!

Tom Collins

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2009
A solid Tom Collins recipe. Omit the bitters if you don't have them. I use less lemon juice (1 ounce). Fresh lemon juice is best, but bottled will work in a pinch. If you want something light and refreshing, try this recipe! If you're not a gin fan, substitue vodka for a Vodka Collins.

Cosmopolitan

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2009
This was my first attempt at making a cosmo at home. Yum!! I used triple sec instead of cointreau, Rose's sweetened lime juice, and cran-raspberry juice. I rimmed the glass with sugar and garnished with a lime wheel. Fantastic! These will really sneak up on you, so I limit myself to one... or maybe two...

Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2009
This was pretty good. I added toffee bits to the filling and rolled it in mini chocolate chips and toffee bits. Like other reviewers, I added extra sugar to thicken it up a bit. The ball wasn't firm enough to roll in the mini chips and toffee bits at first, so I placed it in a bowl lined with wax paper and tucked it away in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Then, it was easy to add the topping. It softened up by the time it was served, but it was a great cnsistency, in my opinion. Guests were able to scoop it out with a spoon. I served it with honey bee shaped graham snack crackers, and it made a perfect dip. I think the nuts would be great, but I chose not to use them due to picky kids and because I was afraid it would be taken for a "regular" cheeseball rather than a dessert. This is a quick, no-bake recipe that I'll probably make again when I'm short on time.

Cherry Bomb

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2009
This was just okay. I cut back on the grenadine a little, but it was still sickeningly sweet. It was drinkable, but I don't think I'll make it again. It reminded me of fizzy cough syrup.

Jalapeno Popper Spread

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2009
Very good! I made this for a pool party last night, and everyone loved it. Even the picky kids liked it! I couldn't find fresh jalapenos, so I used "tame" jalapenos from a jar. Because the jarred jalapenos had less heat, I used double the amount. It had just enough kick ithout being too spicy for the pickiest guests. I followed another reviewer's suggestion and added 1/2 cup of panko bread crumbs to the parmesan topping. It turned out great! I highly recommend serving this with toasted baguette slices. I sliced the baguette about 1/4 inch thick and placed the slices on a cookie sheet. I popped them in a 350 degree oven for about 5 minutes. Like other reviewers, I recommend baking this is a pie dish. I plan to make it again with fresh jalapenos for a little more heat!
