About this Cook
Avid Elvis Costello fan, employed at a Fiduciary. I do perform in musicals every once in a while! I love my houseplants and my potted plants outside. I probably think I'm cooler than I really am :-)
My favorite things to cook
Anything that is Barbequed, Smoked, Fried, Pickled, Dehydrated, Slowcooked, inexpensive, or exotic (especially Thai or Indian or Spanish). I think I love old world cuisine! I enjoy baking rustic loaves when I have the time.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Swedish pancakes (or crepes as most people know them) but much larger than I've seen regularly. My dad used to cook these every Sunday, and we used to slather them with everything from syrup to cottage cheese to sour cream. I *must* get that recipe, but I think it's in his head...and he has a special pan and way of greasing it with fat and a technique for turning them...I hope I can master them one day! Another simple Sunday tradition was the drive through dairy, when we'd get milk and orange juice bars. My mom likes to cook veggies in like a drop of water, so I grew up smelling a lot of burnt vegetables. She also was great at cooking southern cuisine because she was raised in Texas. He traditions as she ages is to mix the most unlikely things together like potstickers and spaghetti sauce...it's her version of Italian Asian fusion :-)
My cooking triumphs
Mastering the art of cooking from a recipe or even being able to throw something together that actually tastes great from what's on hand. I'm really proud everytime something turns out exceptionally well and becomes a favorite.
My cooking tragedies
Salisbury Steak in college, I mixed everything together in the recipe and ruined it! I also burned a pan of eggs that were on their way to being hard boiled. Boy that stunk...don't party and then get a craving for egg salad sandwiches at 2 in the morning!

Deep-Fried Turkey Marinade
This was really tasty. We did two turkeys, the brine in Brown Sugar and Water and this recipe. It turned out really tasty and the deep frying ensures it's moist! Ours did end up darkening to a very dark, dark brown, but it didn't taste burnt at all and believe me, we eat the skin! The marinade made so much that we didn't use it all and there was enough left for a whole other turkey. I would also recommend gloves for sensitive skin. Really off the wall, but great recipe!!

Awesome Slow Cooker Pot Roast
I like easy, and this is easy! The second time I made it I had to improvise for lack of Onion Soup mix :-) I put some au jus concentrate, some dehydrated onions and home dehydrated sliced mushrooms, some granulated garlic, some paprika, a little chicken soup buillion, the reduced fat cream of mushroom soup, about a half a soup can of water and some celery salt. I cooked at 180 for 8 hours and it came out really well. I seared my 3.65 lb chuck roast really well first in olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper first, so I could utilize my cast iron skillet. That adds time, but it browns the meat so nicely! Will make again! It's fun to use the recipe as written or to improvise as needed. Always turns out well. It's so funny that 3008 plus people have reviewed this! Had to get my .02 cents in. Perfect for this cold weather.

Vegan Mac and No Cheese
It turned out well, although I only used brown rice noodles instead of regular. Use water when reheating. It's not a bad taste! The health benefits are there as well.
