My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas Eve was always spent with all my aunts, uncles and cousins, and the table was always spread with a Swedish smorgasbord. Before we ate, the whole family would join together and sing the Doxology. The meal included, but was not limited to rice pudding, saffron bread, bond-ost, hard tack, pickled herring, codfish pudding, scalloped potatoes, ham, Swedish meatballs, rye bread, and much more! One of our favorite breakfasts is Swedish Plattar (pancakes). My husband used to refuse to eat them, saying they are not "real" pancakes. Now, that is what he requests when I make pancakes!
