About this Cook
I am a single guy who likes to cook. And yes, STRAIGHT MEN CAN COOK. I live by myself, and I try to cook at least twice a week. I don't mean like something from a box, I mean making something from scratch. I like to learn how to cook on my own; what recipes work for my lifestyle (leftovers for work), what recipes reflect my personality (American home cooked meals).
My favorite things to cook
I like down-home cooking. Stuff that sticks to your gut and reminds me of what my Mom cooked when I was a kid. I love making a great dinner for someone. I like making a perfect desert and giving it to someone. Key Lime pie using REAL key limes, Chocolate Biscotti using only TOP cocoa ingredients, etc. Old school comfort food is what I like to cook. Still searching for that ultimate peanut butter cookie... for some reason I can't nail that one down yet.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up in a big family (1 of 6 kids). Mom didn't really have time to make wonderful meals, but I remember things like meatloaf, mac + cheese, baked bread, baked chicken, etc. All of this was made from scratch.
My cooking triumphs
Perfecting mom's apple pie (improved upon it, actually). Making perfect mint chocolate chip mereingues. I can imagine a dish in my head and how to plate it to appear inviting to my guests - I have a knack for pulling that off quite well (presentation is KEY for the girl across the table when you cook for them!!)
My cooking tragedies
One time my pasta primavera spilled alllllll over the kitchen. I almost cried, but remembered I am a man, and opened a beer and cleaned the kitchen instead. I made some maple cookies once that were just cardboard. OH And I nearly set my kitchen on fire (who knew bagel chips toasted up so fast!?)

Zucchini Muffins
Awesome. My girl was whinning about using up an extra zucchini that was going to go bad soon. She wanted to bake it in a muffin but only use wheat flour. I don't know what her problem was - I used this site to search for those 2 items and exclude all other flours (all purpose, white, bread) and got THIS recipe. We made'em and we loved'em. I especially like how the recipe leaves itself open to changes. We kept the egss whole because we're not concerned about that. We added some brown sugar and splenda to make them more sweet. When they cooked up they stuck to the paper cups pretty badly, but we'll figure that out. Overall I say this is an excellent recipe and definitely one we're keeping around next time she wines about extra vegetables about to go bad...!

Strawberry Banana Pie
Not impressed. First, I think the ratio of bananas to strawberries is off. I recommend 1 fewer banana and another cup or two of strawberries. Second, the amount of topping this recipe calls for is astronomical! You could decrease by two-thirds, and still have enough left over. Third, it cooks up like strawberry-banana-soup. Don't try to eat this warm- you'll never be able to get a decent "slice" of "pie". It fares much better served cold. Fourth, because this recipe calls for so much topping, it's like eating a mouthfull of dust. You need a half-glass of milk to wash down every bite. The topping isn't good at all. Needs more nuts and much less flour and dry ingredients. The taste of the fruit, if you can taste it through all the crust and topping, isn't bad. This might be served better with a whipped cream topping rather than the dust-topping this recipe calls for. I can't recommend this one.

Italian Meatballs
I don't get the high review for this recipe. If you're going to buy 3 POUNDS of beef, then you may as well buy FRESH parsley and oregano too! I didn't really like these. Firstly, these absolutely do not need 1 HOUR to cook. By 45 mins mine were done, and dry at that. Also, if you're going to simmer them for 4 HOURS, there's little need to cook them in the first place, much less fully-cooked! I tried these after they were baked and didn't like them. I've had frozen meatballs that tasted better - and are cheaper than making your own. Secondly, and I've already mentioned this, but who simmers sauce with meatballs for 4 HOURS? This recipe means that you have to start this at noon, so that it's ready by dinnertime. In today's society, this doesn't work for the modern family. I'm a bachelor myself and I'm not hanging out all day babysitting my stovetop hoping that these bland things would be better after simmering for 4 hours. There are better recipes out there, and if I don't find one on here I'm going to create my own. "Italian Meatballs" indeed!!
