About this Cook
I was raised watching cooking shows..Julia Child, Galloping Gormet, and every Saturday watching ALL the cooking shows on PBS. My mother is my inspiration....we always had home cooked meals and desserts. To make a little extra money when we were young she would bake breads and cookies and give them to my dad to sell at his office. Now, with my children, I don't want them to be raised on boxed or canned "prepared" foods, I want them to have the same memories that I had growing up of mom cooking yummy meals from scratch. My oldest daughter already tells me that she loves what I cook (most times anyway!) and that makes all the time I spend in the kitchen worthwhile!
My favorite things to cook
Anything really! I love this site because I have found soooo many new things to make! I really enjoy "home cooking", but occaisionally will try more exotic things. I'm not much of a "baker", but every once and a while I'll get in the mood to bake sweet breads and desserts. I enjoy cooking more because I can eyeball things and switch things around without it turning into a complete disaster.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My memories involve all of our holiday dinners. Coming from a large Italian family, on Christmas Eve we would have the traditional "7 fishes" after having a large antipasta salad and spaghetti with olive sauce. We would spend hours around the table, and anyone was welcome to stop by. A couple years ago, I hosted my first Christmas dinner with recipies from this site, and it was a wonderful success! (although EXHAUSTING! How did grandma do it all those years!)
My cooking triumphs
As mentioned above, my first Christmas dinner for my family and my husbands family. And hearing my husband and family members telling me what a good cook I am (it's all to this site and all those cooking shows I watch credit, though!)
My cooking tragedies
I can't remember anything specific, although there was a couple times I was baking and tried to substitute things.......it didn't turn out at all! I think I'll mainly stick to cooking!

Pecan Tassies
Followed this recipe exactly and turned out great. I brought them to a party and everyone liked them. My 3 year old even ate a bunch. Easy recipe to do and the look so fancy. Make sure not to fill the tarts too much with the brown sugar mixture....I had a few that "puffed" up quite a bit. I put the tins on a baking sheet just in case there was any overflow, which wasn't a problem. I will use this recipe often, esp. when I don't feel like making a whole pie. Thanks!!!

Taco Dip
I am rating this on the version that I made. This dip was wonderful, and one friend at the party I brought it to said that I was not allowed to bring the leftovers home. The only things I did differently was to put the sour cream on plain (no taco mix) and I made homemade guacomole that I put on top of the sour cream. So the layers went beans, sour cream, guacomole, salsa, veggies and cheese. I think the homemade guacomole really adds to this dip, and makes the use of the taco packet not really necessary, since you don't want too many competing flavors going on. For fresh guacomole: throw 2 avacadoes, a chopped plum tomato, the juice of 1 lemon, and salt, pepper, garlic powder and cilantro to taste. Pulse it in your processor until semi-smooth. My family loves this guacomole, and it's so fresh and easy! It will enhance any Mexican dish you make!! Thanks for the recipe...I will use it often!!

Baked Dijon Salmon
I'm sorry to say this, but I'm really not sharing the love here. I thought the mustard taste came on just a bit too strong, and it's bitterness overpowered the other flavors. I like the basic idea of this dish, but I might fool around with the topping and come up with something my family will enjoy. Thanks!
