I'm a 25 year old college student in California. I cook everday for my family of three and I love to bake birthday cakes for everyone I know. I think I've picked up a few more friends since this birthday cake thing got started. =)
My favorite things to cook
One of my favorite things to cook is chicken enchiladas from scratch. It's the only meal I ever learned to make with my grandmother who came to the US from Mexico as a young woman. These take such a long time to make that I usually spend a whole weekend preparing them and then filling up my freezer with 20 pans!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My dad was the chef of the family while I was growing up. He and I would make the biggest messes preparing calzone, pizzas, enchiladas, etc. He learned a lot of his crafts through trial and error in the hopes of replicating and/or improving on some of the dishes we discovered while stationed overseas in Europe. Those traits of experimentation were passed on to me.
My cooking triumphs
My greatest cooking triumph is the first time I made a four course meal for my family all on my own, and there wasn't a scrap left on anyone's plate! They loved it!
My cooking tragedies
I'm ashamed to admit this, even now some 6 years later, but my greatest cooking tragedy is the most gorgeous and wonderfully fragrant fried chicken I've ever seen/smelled. I was welcoming a new roommate into my home with a big Southern style meal. My other two roommates were talking me up to this new guy saying "Oh yeah, she makes the best meals! We are never late when it's Heather's turn to cook. Etc. Etc." I set out all the fixings and took the chicken out of the oil. Little drumsticks and breasts laying there on the drying rack glistening. As soon as I put the chicken on the table, everyone dug in and loaded up their plates. Ahh the first bite.... RAW INSIDE! I've never lived it down and now I'm terrified to fry anything!
