About this Cook
I've grown away from heavier coking in the last several years. I'm not sure if it's Because we're getting older, or Wiser. ;) Keeping things light and simple, yet still delicious has been the goal and this website is wonderful to come to for ideas. Outdoor camping/cooking is the thing I am currently into. It's a whole different way of cooking, fun to experiment.
My favorite things to cook
Squashes are fun to experiment with, sauteed lightly in olive oils brings out a variety of flavors. Since it's winter, soups are great to make. My recent Lentil Bean soup has made a great hit with the extended family and neighbors we've shared it with.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The biggest tradition is doing it together. Sharing the chore of chopping vegetables or being near each other while doing the "stirring duty", make for great shared time.
My cooking triumphs
I completed my first bake sale for the church - Carrot Pineapple Cake 1 and Mom's Ginger Snaps (with fresh ginger and candied ginger added for punch) were a rave hit. Both are from AllRecipes. I sold six cakes (two small 9x9's per batch) and 10 dozen cookies (I get 5 dozen out of one batch) and was the first to sell out. Was just wonderful, got many compliments the next day. (Even during, they couldn't stop eating the cookies.) So I'd say my triumph is AllRecipes, and that's not an ad promo or anything, just the truth. I use it a lot, as I rely on reviews to help guide me - so much easier and so many smart, informative cooks out there. I continue to grow as a cook in this community.
My cooking tragedies
I've rushed things a few times here and there, ended up with carrots not quite done in something, but in general, no huge goof-ups. Knock on wood. I'm sure it's just waiting to happen though, I'll let ya know when it hits. ;)

Russian Mushroom and Potato Soup
Delicious, a wonderful rainy day feel good soup. Hubby likes it thicker, more stew like - a couple tbs of minute tapioca made it perfect for him.

Honey Baked Chicken I
I'll admit I altered this a bit because all I had were boneless-skinless breasts. I cut them in strips and pounded them out a little, then basically followed the recipe except I cooked them in a large skillet on the stove top. A little mustard powder gave it almost a barbeque taste that the hubby truly loved. I'll definitely try it again with bone in chicken pieces - loved the mix of ingredients! Thanks so much for another keeper.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup
This was a great recipe. I did somewhat alter it; I added about a cup of potato flakes rather than dealing with the flour roux because I was running short on time. I added it about a third cup at a time and in three stirs it was thick and delicious looking so I called it done. I'll definitely make it again the right way, but since the hubby went back for seconds - I would say this was a hit.
