Sugar Cookie Cutouts

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2007
My family has now voted this their favorite sugar cookie recipe, topping my Granny's treasured recipe. Not sure how I feel about that, but this recipe does yield a very workable dough and a soft, not-to-sweet cookie that is adaptable to a number of flavorings and spices. I added nutmeg to my dough, and it was perfect--it was not bland and was plenty sweet with or without icing. I rolled these a little thicker than 1/4 inch to make them nice & soft and frosted with Buttercream Frosting, from this site. Excellent recipe, Laura!

Golden Cinnamon Granola

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2007
I did like the honey/cinnamon/butter combo--the taste is good, although I like mine sweeter. I don't like raisins & left them out, so I'd like to try it again with a little brown sugar to compensate sweet-wise. Even though I used unsalted butter and half the salt, it was still too salty for me. I almost burned mine at 45 minutes, so watch it carefully.

Buttered Biscuits

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2007
Easy, quick & good! I was attracted to this recipe by the photo by MommyFromSeattle and followed her suggestions about adding sugar & salt. I rolled the dough and made about 10 smaller biscuits. They didn't rise up real high, but they were light and soft inside with nice crisp edges, and were surprisingly flavorful.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Gravy

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2007
We enjoyed the flavor that the buttermilk added, but I used more than one cup for 3 chicken breasts. I added garlic powder and more pepper and needed a little more flour to coat well. I used 1% milk and no water in the gravy.

Dark Chocolate Cake I

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2007
I served this cake as we sat down to watch a movie. I didn't hear the first several minutes of the movie because my Mom was raving so much about the cake! Hubby loved it too. It was light and tender and the kind you like to mash your fork around the plate to get every crumb. I used Creamy Cream Cheese Frosting as the filling and a vanilla butter cream cheese icing. This is great cake!

Made a perfect filling for my chocolate cake. All I added was a teaspoon of vanilla, and all I can say is yummy--I was licking the beaters!

Japanese-Style Sesame Green Beans

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2007
I was drawn to this recipe by all the beautiful photos of it, and it did not disappoint. I went to the store with sesame seeds on my list and forgot to get them, but in spite of that the green beans were perfectly flavored. My husband had 2 huge helpings--and he's not a veggie lover!

Ham Salad Spread

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2007
I halved everything (except the egg) and used celery seed instead of celery, onion powder instead of onions, and left out the mustard. My husband loved it! Served on sandwich buns made from Oatmeal Sourdough Rolls, from this website--very tasty!

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies II

I doubled the recipe and made super-sized cookies. They are easy to make, bake up beautifully, and are fudgy and chocolatey--what more could you ask?

Cherry Pie II

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2007
Good old-fashioned cherry pie flavor! I love fruit pies that are thickened with flour, such as this one. I used 2 cans of sour cherries, increased the flour to 6 tablespoons and added another 1/2 cup sugar since the cherries were very tart. I added a dash of cinnamon, a teaspoon of vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon almond extract. Very good recipe, Carol!

Oat-N-Honey Bread

We enjoyed this tender, flavorful bread with our bacon & tomato sandwiches tonight. I made it manually, baked at 350 for about 30-35 minutes. This will be a repeat recipe at my house!

Fabulous Fruit Salad II

Reviewed: Aug. 8, 2007
We loved this! I've not used cinnamon as a spice in fruit salad before and it was aromatic and scrumptious. I used fresh pineapple, red grapes, and bananas and added some lemon juice and a little brown sugar.

Pasta with Fresh Tomatoes and Corn

Reviewed: Aug. 8, 2007
This was a very refreshing and satisfying summer dish. I chose orzo as my pasta and used red cherry, roma, and yellow pear tomatoes, and fresh basil--all from my garden, which made it taste even better! I subbed balsamic vinegar per the suggestion of other reviewers. Delicious--I will definitely make again!

Easy, Eggless Strawberry Ice Cream

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2007
I agree with Shawn--it is very refreshing on a hot day. I had to taste it as soon as it was ready, and it is delicious. I had a cup of crushed strawberries instead of the full 2 cups, but it was plenty for us. I used 1% milk and evaporated milk, since I didn't have cream. Very good strawberry flavor. I do think 1/4 teaspoon of salt is too much, so I added 1/8 teaspoon. Even that was a little too much for me; I will only add a pinch next time.

Luscious Slush Punch

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2007
When I was young, my Mom was always "the punch lady" for church receptions, so for her 95th birthday I decided to serve punch to her--I chose this recipe and she loved it! My only change was to divide into four smaller portions to fit into one of her old Wexford crystal bowls. I ended up using exactly half the recipe for 12 people, because everyone kept going back for seconds & thirds. We still have some frozen so next time might try some Asti Spumante instead of the soda for an adult version!

Crab and Cheese Spread

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2007
I served this at a family gathering and everyone loved it. Even my "tell me what's in it first" husband loved it and is eating the few bites left over today. I added extra lemon juice, and next time I'll add more hot sauce. I used Rachel's Wasabi Cocktail Sauce, from this website. I think this would be equally good with shrimp.

White Chocolate Pound Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2007
Made this for my mother's 95th birthday celebration, and it was a hit. I love the crust it makes, the flavor is just delicious with that hint of almond, and the white chocolate gives it an elegant touch. Instead of chopping, I melted the white chocolate to mix in with the other ingredients, and I only used white chocolate on top. It was simple but perfect.

Lemon Meringue Pie

Reviewed: Aug. 2, 2007
I think the trick is to make it a day ahead to give the filling time to set up. I did not care for the crust at all--it was somewhat tough and not flaky. The filling was delicious, Mom loved it, and the meringue was OK. In the future I might use the filling recipe.
