About this Cook
Some of my greatest pleasure comes from recreating the comfort foods and desserts of my childhood. I had the best teachers--my grandmother who made the most delicious fruit pies and sugar cookies and my mother who inspired and encouraged my love of cooking. I love living in Oklahoma and try to incorporate my state's local, organic products into my baking. I have a small but growing customer base with my bakery and catering business, For Goodness Sake. I blog about my adventures at http://grannyloohoo dot blogspot dot com I enjoy being in the kitchen with my daughter, who also helps with the catering.
My favorite things to cook
I am the events coordinator and caterer for my church, so I experiment with all kinds of new recipes, especially those from Allrecipes and from my favorite blogs. Probably my favorite thing about being a baker is making and decorating specialty cupcakes and cakes for customers.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, so preparing the traditional meal is something I keenly anticipate every year. This past Thanksgiving my DIL cooked the entire meal, and it was fantastic! Favorite Christmas traditions are to bake my grandmother's sugar cookies and gooseberry pie, as well as Danish Kringles from a recipe given to me by my junior high home economics teacher.
My cooking triumphs
My triumphs are when a customer praises my food, and when my husband says "wow, this is great!"
My cooking tragedies
One Thanksgiving when I was sick (that was my excuse), I forgot to put sugar in the pumpkin pie! My DH put whipped cream on it and ate it anyway.

Sweet 'n' Savory Date Loaves
This made a very moist and flavorful bread. It is rich with dates, and the rosemary provides an appealing fresh taste. I had no apricots but I did use the nectar, added orange juice and pulp, and minced fresh rosemary instead of dry. I would definitely like to try it with peach nectar. I made 2 small loaves and 6 muffins.

Black Bean Hummus
Although I think the recipe is a very good one, after trying it, I realize that I prefer hummus with chickpeas. I added caramelized onions, an extra clove of garlic, oil, extra tahini and extra lemon juice, and I used smoked paprika. It was delicious, but I missed the chickpeas.

Ice Cream Scones
It was easy and fun to try, and although the scones rose nicely, I found the texture to be heavy and dense rather than light and flaky. Also, due to the amount of self-rising flour, the salt content is too high for me.
