Grape Leaves Aleppo

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2011
I am Syrian also (Shammy), my grandmother made this all the time and now I do. Our recipe is extremely similar, however we also use bones in the bottom of the pot for added flavor. Also, they are also delicious with beef if you do not like lamb. This is a staple in my home and we have even made them to pass around at my neices wedding. The restaurant felt honored to have us share this meal with them as well. Thanks for the tip about adding olives, will have to try that next time! :) Yum!

Lentils and Rice with Fried Onions (Mujadarrah)

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2011
My Syrian grandmother made this all the time. We pronounced it (jeddarah. She usually used salt and pepper with either all spice or cumin, depending on what she had on hand. I make this too and like to use long grain basmati rice or parboiled if in a hurry. Also, I like to brown vermicelli in olive oil in a skillet first to add to the rice. Serve with plain yogurt (leban)...yum!!! :)

Skillet Rolls

This recipe was a huge hit in my house on Thanksgiving day! I have only baked with yeast a few times so I was nervous about how well I would do with these. I followed the recipe exactly and it was extremely easy! The flavor was wonderful and my family told me this recipe is now expected on all holidays! Thanks so much for sharing!

Won Ton Wrapper Appetizers

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2010
I made these for my daughter's graduation party and they were a huge hit. I followed the recipe exactly and doubled it. I also followed another person's advice and pre-cooked the sausage. I know someone else said not to but if you don't they may be really soggy with the grease you also get from the cheese. I think it is better to drain the sausage. They were extremely tasty and less fattening that way. Because I had so much food, there were some left over which was hard to believe since people were raving and asking for the recipe. They are just as good and maybe even better leftover! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Jenn's Out Of This World Spaghetti and Meatballs

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2010
I have used this recipe for years, give or take a few things. My late step-father made his (authentic italian), in a very similar way. Cooking the meatballs in the sauce is the only way I will do it. As for the sauce, I usually use 1 can of Progresso crushed tomatoes and refill the can with water to add, 2 cans of paste also refilling each can with water and adding to the pot. I do not add onions but brown garlic and sausage at the bottom of the sauce pan before adding the tomatoes. This omits the oil since sausage has its own. I also do not use oregano, just basil and sometimes red pepper, along with the black pepper and a very little bit of salt. Lastly, instead of sugar, I use one whole carrot to add enough sweetness to get rid of the tartness. I never boil but cook on low for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Yum!

Southern Pimento Cheese

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
I had already been making this dip with one difference. In the past, I've made it with bacon so when I saw this recipe, I thought it was funny how similar it was to my dip. So, I followed your measurements and made it your way plus added chopped bacon for my bunko group this passed weekend. It was a huge hit! Thanks!

Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2009
Awesome soup. I made a few very minor changes because I didn't have everything in the list of ingredients. I added about 2 cups of cut up ham from a spiral ham I made a few days ago and simmered the soup with the ham bone too. I used baby carrots and jarred crushed garlic. I didn't have any spinach so I left that and the vinegar out. It was superb! Thanks for sharing!

This was very yummy and would be good on chicken too! I followed the recipe exactly and it made more sauce than I needed. Next time, I will either have more with it or cut the recipe back a bit. Thanks for sharing it was delish!

Melt - In - Your - Mouth Shortbread

Awesome cookie! This recipe made perfect shortbread cookies. I rolled some of them in a sugar/chopped pistachio mixture then put apple cinnamon jelly in the thumbprint center. Huge hit at work and several people wanted the recipe. Will definitely use this recipe when I want shortbread. Thanks for sharing!

Pignoli Cookies I

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2008
This is the second year in a row I've made these for Christmas. My Aunt made these when I was a kid and I don't have her recipe. Thanks for sharing this one. Both times that I've made these, someone has asked for the recipe. They will be a staple at Christmas for me from now on. ;) (Edited to add the following) Make sure you use the parchment paper but also cooking spray. Wait until the cookies are a bit cooled before removing to wire rack and they won't stick.
