In 2008 I had my 3rd child and have taken time off to be with the family. That has meant having more time to cook and a motivation to improve my skills. Other than cooking I love poetry, literature, photography, arts, and travel. My husband and I are from different cultures so I love combining our American and Algerian cultures in cuisine.
My favorite things to cook
Algerian Couscous, family recipes from mom and dad, soups, desserts, pastas.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Growing up, both my mom and dad shared cooking responsibilities, and it was quite a competition. My mom is a casserole, american dinner, and pie QUEEN. My dad is king of the bbq hands down, an awesome baker, and very inventive - never uses a recipe. I have great memories of both parents in the kitchen. Now that I'm an adult, our family tradition is getting the assistance of my 9 year old son so he can carry on he tradition of my dad, and also teaching my husband the basics of cooking since he never did anything in the kitchen until he was almost 30! I plan to have my two youngest helping as soon as they are able. I want to be a family in the kitchen like I had when I was a child.
My cooking triumphs
Making Algerian cuisine that satisfies my husbands taste for authentic food from his homeland.
My cooking tragedies
Until this year I always flunked when making potato salad, and have burnt a few things when not paying attention.
