About this Cook
I am a happily married woman who loves to cook just about anything! I have relocated to the Panhandle of Florida and living in the South is quite a different culinary experience! My friends swear that I will love being a southern belle, but I was born in MA, and there will always be something special about cold winter days... My husband and I love to travel so we really enjoy trying spicy and exotic foods from other lands. My favorite place to travel (hands down) is Israel. Love, love, love middle eastern food. Over the last couple of years, my husband and I have decided on the importance of healthy eating. So we have had to relearn what we thought was "healthy" (read: goodbye diet soda!) With a little one on the way I am more determined then ever to eat good, wholesome foods without sacrificing taste. But don't be fooled...I do LOVE some of the desserts from this site!!
My favorite things to cook
I adore fall baking! And now that I live in FL, I have to make fall happen for my household! I love sweet pumpkin & spice smells drifting through the house. I also love trying out new recipes! It is such a great feeling when a dish turns out great and my husband raves! :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving was always a big deal at our home. Yum, nothing like the familiar tastes of turkey, gravy, homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, green beans & a glass of white wine. Great introduction to the holidays! We would eat early, have pumpkin pie in the late afternoon, and dive into the leftovers at night. Fun tradition, but glad it happens only once a year! My waistline couldn't handle it!! :)
My cooking triumphs
When I was a teenager, I decided to try to make my mom's awesome baked ziti, and bring it to a potluck. It was such a hit that from that point on, I was hooked on cooking! Since then, I have tried my hand at all different types of cusines and techniques. I know enough about cooking to know that I am no "expert." I'll leave that to the Bobby Flay's of the world. But I do love to entertain and share something tastey! I think the greatest compliment you can get from someone is, "Can I get your recipe?"
My cooking tragedies
Q. - Is it possible to mess up boxed brownies? A. - Yes, it is possible. I was on the phone while baking a box of brownies, and I grabbed the olive oil instead of the veggie oil. Not realizing what I did, I brought them to a potluck dinner. Not only did the brownies not cook completely, but they tasted awful!

Grandma Ople's Apple Pie
Boy, has it been a long time since I have made a homemade apple pie! This recipe turned out wonderfully! I used the Best Ever Pie Crust recipe from this site. A couple of things to note: I do agree with the previous review that there was no "paste" consistency with the flour/butter mixture. The syrup had a great caramel like flavor (which I poured on the pie before I put on the top crust- did not make lattice top.) I also agree that spices are needed but love the suggestion to coat the apples with the spice, not to mix it into the syrup. And finally, 8 granny smith apples will make for a *tart* pie which is great if that's what you want. I prefer sweeter pies so I used 2 granny smith, 2 gala and 2 golden delicious. Turned out to be a great combination although I still had apples left over, so next time I will cut back to 5 apples. I used a stone pie plate and it was beautifully cooked in about 40 minutes. I will make this one again!

Best Ever Pie Crust
I took the advice to substitute 1/2 of the shortening with 1/2 a cup of butter and it turned out fabulous. I used the Grandma Opal's Apple Pie recipe from this site. It was cooked in a stone pie plate and it was perfectly cooked in about 40 minutes.

London Broil for the Slow Cooker
I'll admit, I did not have high hopes because it seemed too easy. I was pleasantly surprised that it came out with a rich flavor and was pull apart tender. (For those who do not love the flavor of Cream of mushroom soup, substitute the Cream of Chicken and Mushroom soup as it will give a better flavor. I would not recommend going straight to the Cream of Chicken because it will be too soupy. You need the texture of the Cream of Mushroom.) The only thing I will do differently next time is double the sauce recipe!
