My favorite things to cook
Everything! My husband is Italian, so I've been honing my skills on that for the past year or so. I've been reverting to a lot of my grandmother's recipes for Midwestern comfort foods, but for some reason they never taste quite like how she makes them.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I guess I didn't fully realize my heritage until moving away! My grandparents still keep up with "Old World" practices, so there's always plenty of homemade pickles, lefse, rosettes, and German potato salad waiting for us. Thankfully, subsequent generations of our family have carried on these traditions in our own ways, and I look forward to raising children to share them with someday...
My cooking triumphs
Having built up a nice repertoire after a year of devout "recipe following", I now have the confidence to just look at a recipe and kind of take it from there on my own, knowing it will still turn out. Seeing that I was always cooking for 2, I never wanted someone else to have to sit through a "ruined" recipe! Another so-called triumph was teaching myself to can. Obviously it's not difficult, just a little tiring when attending to a hot stove top...in the middle of August...without decent air-conditioning.
