About this Cook
I've been actively cooking recipes from this site since 2003. I only recently discovered the RE & the picture submission option. I've been having great fun with both features :)
My favorite things to cook
Desserts & yeast breads, primarily because those are what I do best. I despise making cookies & I used to dislike eating them too (yeah, I know...) but since quitting smoking I have discovered I like to eat ALL SORTS OF STUFF I used to not want anything to do with. It's a give & take--the best I can say for it is that it has expanded my palate!
My favorite family cooking traditions
LOVE: Some people say it with flowers. Some people say it with presents. My family says it with FOOD. That has been our tradition for a long time. My mother taught us (her 2 daughters and 1 son) to learn to cook for other people and not just yourself, to do it well & to do it often, and we are continuing that tradition as best we can :)
My cooking triumphs
Shortly after my husband & I bought our home, my sister & her family moved away. About a year later, when they were home for a visit, we had all 4 of them + my parents up to my house for dinner & to see the property. I made fettucine alfredo with 2 desserts--a Bananas Foster pie and a Chocolate Irish Cream pie. I've since lost the book with the pie recipes (...Yeah. I *know*.)but I haven't forgotten seeing them all GORGE themselves on alfredo sauce & delicious homemade pies. My nephew (on Ritalin, which has appetite suppression as a side effect) had THREE helpings, a clear sign of extraordinary tastiness!
My cooking tragedies
I tried a new alfredo recipe from here, which involved zucchini. It was absolutely AWFUL. I'm sure I overcooked the zucchini (nothing on earth should taste like THAT...) but that can't have been the only problem with the recipe. The look on my husband's face when he tasted it was priceless, I've never seen such a look from him that didn't involve spiders! I also recently served a chicken that I guess I had temp'd wrong, because the inside bled! This yielded another spidery-expression from the husband. I finished cooking it to great success though :)

Chicken Wing Dip
I divided this recipe in half. I used a lot more Cheddar than suggested, because I had 75% of a brick I needed to use up. Instead of Ranch dressing, I used blue cheese dressing. I like it better. I melted all my ingredients in a pot on the stove before transferring it to the crock pot to keep warm. I didn't have any trouble with oil pooling--probably because my cheddar never got hot enough to separate (like it surely will in the oven. Blech.) This was delicious & right up our alley, and I'll make this again for sure. Thanks much!

Pretzel Crust
Tasty, but I didn't personally find that 3/4 c. of butter was enough for 2 1/2 cups of crushed pretzel crumbs. Maybe I just like my crusts to be more butter-soaked though, so 4 stars!

Spaetzle and Chicken Soup
I've made spaetzle before. Just once, with a mix, but that was enough that I understand how the process works, & how it should look. The spaetzle part of the recipe DOES NOT MATCH the method given for cooking it. The spaetzle part, as written, is just about right for the "push through a colander into boiling water" method of making spaetzle. It is NOT right for making homemade noodles (as instructions say)--too wet. I added another cup and a half of flour and spooned mine in. They ARE delicious--but this recipe is not for the novice cook. -1 star for the ratio of liquid:flour not being near right for the spaetzle, but otherwise, delicious & thanks :) P.S. I'd make again, but I'll play around with the liquid:flour ratio and use a colander to drip-through, as that's easier anyway.
