Close-up view; if you look very closely you can see that inside my springform pan I built a little wall of apples, which wound up sticking together perfectly. I think the caramel stuff formed only because my apples were damp as I had to mix the apple/cinnamon/sugar mixture by hand. (Tossing the apples sounds risky to me!) The brown thing in the center is a tiny bundle of dried berry--probably a strawberry, I don't know, they come in a big bag.
