About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook for groups (growing up in a family of 7 will do that for ya) So when potluck time comes around for work - I am in my element. I just love cooking in the Crockpot for these days... so that when lunch time comes around I have something freshly cooked to offer :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Dad's from a small town in Wisconsin called New Glarus, settled by Swiss immigrants. Every Christmas we would mixup a big batch of Bräzeli batter and take turns with the iron press. I can't wait until I have children of my own so I can carry on the tradition. Recently I've been looking for a Bräzeli cooking iron of my own. The traditional swiss one that I have grown up, with is now costing about $350 for a new one! So instead I'm going for a simular german/norwegian cookie 'Krumkake' iron that I can get at Target for about $50.
My cooking tragedies
My worst tragedy so far was when I was 8-10yrs old and I mixed up the measurements for the sugar and salt for a Strawberry Shortcake. The cake was inedible but we made due with the frosting and strawberries on top! My most recent tragedy was trying to make Herbed Foccacia Bread. I did three batches and the last one burnt to the pan so bad I had to throw it out - pan and all!

Turkey in a Bag
Using the bag makes the turkey juicy every single time. Also to completely enjoy moist turky put it breast side down for the majority of cooking and at the last 45min or so remove from bag and turn right side up to brown the top a bit.

Rhubarb Strawberry Crunch
Easy to follow recipe. We greatly enjoyed the flavors. I used frozen rhubarb and frozen strawberries as we didn't have fresh. To help quicken the defrosting I thawed them out by rinsing them in room temp water and draining them. I was skeptical of adding the flour to the fruit mix but it helped to thicken the fruit juices up so you don't have to cook it forever. I took some of the others' suggestions and for the crunch topping and we added 1/4 cup walnuts, 1tsp cinnammon, dash nutmeg, and dash cloves. I'm very glad we did as it needed the extra spice to make it a comfort food :) This is definetly going to be made again in my kitchen and I can't wait to bring it to my work potluck next month. Althought next time I make it I think I'll try adding a dash of ground ginger.
