About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook vegetarian dishes and try new recipes. I have a special interest in cooking totally from scratch w/ little to no processed, "pre-made" ingredients. You won't see any boxes of cake or brownie mixes in my cupboards! I tend to bake more than cook, but I'm expanding my expertise with the help of this website. I love to try out new and different appetizers to wow my family at our gatherings. I also love to bake things to give to my Mom to sample since she has developed such a sweet tooth. Since she's gotten older, she doesn't cook/bake much anymore, so it's a real treat to do that for her. I have a recent interest in baking yeast breads and learning the basics of that.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Many of them have gone by the wayside as our family dwindles. We do continue certain traditions for the holidays such as scalloped oysters and a German bread that my Grandma used to bake every year at Thanksgiving/Christmas time. I wish that I had paid more attention when my Mom was cooking/baking. When I was a child, she used to bake homemade bread and it always came out so perfect.
My cooking triumphs
I've experienced more cooking triumphs within the last few years as my interest has increased. I guess I consider myself a "late bloomer". Some very recent cooking triumphs have resulted from recipes on this site - homemade cornbread, for example. Again, with the help of this site, I succeeded in making killer cinnamon rolls that my boyfriend and Mom devoured.
My cooking tragedies
I'm sure there have been many, but none stand out at the moment! Oh, wait... the fudge that turned out more like frosting... :(

Simple Herb Rice
Pretty good considering how easy it is to make. To make it even easier (and I think tastier), I just heated up vegetarian chicken broth instead of using the bouillon cubes. I'd like to add some garlic next time I make this. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Garlic Potatoes Gratin
I loved the addition of garlic, but think I'd be more apt to make au gratin potatoes the way I'm used to, starting with a roux, etc. Used 1 cup 1% milk and 1/2 cup cream. Thanks for sharing!

All Day Apple Butter
I'm so glad I tried this as I now know I'll be making more throughout the holiday season. Whisking really helped break up the apples to produce a smooth consistency. Like others, I opted to reduce sugar by half and used 1c brown, 1 c white. Since I didn't have cloves, I used pumpkin pie spice in its place. Oh, and since I didn't have quite 5 1/2 pounds of apples, I used some organic pears for the remaining amount. This is soooo good! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
