I'm a 61 yr old widow and for the last two years have cooked on Wednesday nights for about 60 people at my church. I was a preacher's wife for 37 yrs and have cooked for large groups consistantly. I have four grandsons whom I adore and three great adult children. I love living in Denver and plan to stay here the rest of my life.
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy cooking "comfort foods" i.e. spaghetti/lasagna, pot roast w/potatoes & gravy, cheesy scalloped potatoes and ham, chicken/beef and noodles, etc. I love trying new dishes that appeal to all age groups. I also bake and decorate wedding cakes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The best dishes handed down from my mother-in-law and grandmother are smothered steak and some german dishes (my grandmother was an immigrant from Germany). Our best times were when we got together on holidays and shared around the big table. It was always a time of laughter and remembering the "good ol' days".
My cooking triumphs
Once when my husband and I ran a rescue mission, I put on a Christmas banquet for the board of directors and their spouses. Every recipe was a new experience for me, all the way to the dessert. One member commented at the end that he felt like his mouth had been to an amusement park! I felt that was a huge complement.
My cooking tragedies
Long time ago when I was in Girl Scouts, I was put in charge of cooking a pot of campfire stew and serving it to the other girls. I was told to give out a ladle full to each girl. It was way too much for some of them and I ran out before everyone was served. So embarrassing!!
