Made 3 changes to the recipe.
1st - Used 1 tbs mustard seed and 1 tbs pickling spice (I ran out of mustard seed).
2nd - As suggested by other reviewers of this recipe, I rinsed the cucumbers before adding the syrup.
3rd - I omitted the turmeric since I had none. I assumed it was mostly for color.
I used a roasting pan for the cucumber/salt mixture. It was a good size to use for the mixture. I also added the syrup to the rinsed cucumbers in this roasting pan.
