About this Cook
I'm a former book editor, turned SAHM, turned culinary student. I love baking more than any just about any other pursuit, along with cake decorating. I really enjoy working on my blog, Jane's Sweets & Baking Journal (which can be found at www.janessweets.blogspot.com). I have two adolescent sons who keep me hopping, and I'm married to a great guy who loves to test whatever I bake!
My favorite things to cook
Any sweet baked goods of any kind, and pretty much anything else that even remotely falls into the category of the "pastry arts."
My favorite family cooking traditions
White and Dark Chocolate Cheesecake for every Thanksgiving dinner (recipe from Nick Malgieri's book Perfect Cakes--fabulous)!
My cooking triumphs
Cakes, cookies, and quick breads always seem to turn out really well for me.
My cooking tragedies
My latest tragedy involved making ladyfingers from scratch, along with white-chocolate mousse, all on the same day. Let's just say that both recipes knocked me off my high horse. Not my greatest baking encounter!

Cranberry Kuchen
This is a very good coffeecake that nicely plays up the flavor of fresh cranberries. Though it's a yeast recipe, it's not in the least intimidating and is very simple to assemble. This recipe is a keeper. Give it a try!

Rick's Special Buttercream Frosting
Wonderful frosting. I made it exactly the way the recipe reads and used it on cupcakes. I remember reading somewhere that adding a couple tablespoons of meringue powder to it will help stabilize it for piping. I'm going to try that technique this weekend. Have to make two large cakes for a big party. I wonder how this frosting will work in place of a typical "crusting" BC? Hope it will look as smooth as typical crusting BC. We'll see!
