My favorite things to cook
Currently - chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes! I have successfully baked truly magnificent chocolate chip cookies(in my humble opinion :-P) but am in the quest to discover my own unique recipe now.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I can't remember a special tradition. But here's one that developed when I was older - when I was in college (university as Kiwis would call it) our family was invited to some friends of ours and was served rice paper wraps. Unlike the ones we get today, these were not prepared in advance. All the ingredients were laid out on the table and we got to choose our own ingredients and wrap it ourselves. So the entire dinner, we were all busy making our rice paper wraps. It was actually quite entertaining and our whole family loved it - especially me - we started having rice paper wraps quite regularly and it also became mom's specialty when we had guests. Now, this dinner reminds me of 'home' and 'family.'
My cooking triumphs
After one batch of burn cookies and about three more consecutive batches, I successfully made delicious and traditional chocolate chip cookies - the texture and everything looked exactly as it should be and the taste was quite divine..he he. That was a great moment. It was a great accomplishment as I had done quite a bit of research on the net searching for tips for baking cookies and reading through about a thousand chocolate chip cookie recipes.
My cooking tragedies
This was one of my first times baking. I got this great cookie recipe and it said to have the oven at 375 degrees. So I had the oven at 375 degrees. Strangely the oven felt very, very hot but I just assumed my ignorance and happily put in my cookies. The cookies burnt only after a few minutes of being in the oven and my smoke alarm went off. I realised that the temperature was in fahrenheit NOT in Celsius. The joy of living in the southern hemisphere. :)
