My family calls me a McGyver Cook. There can seem to be nothing available in the house, but I will come up with a gourmet meal using little bits of this and that. My biggest problem is that I never write down recipes for what I come up with, so if they love it, I probably won't ever make it again.
My favorite things to cook
Slow roasted meats with fresh herbs. Pastas with sauces that I make on the spot. Vegetarian dishes with loads of flavor.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving: being from New England, I must make some sort of squash dish.
My cooking triumphs
Making a slow-roasted lamb shoulder chop that my husband, a self-professed lamb-hater, ate and loved. He then requested it for a birthday meal a few months later.
My cooking tragedies
I've had a few accidents that didn't quite work out, especially early on. It usually involved too much flavoring or salt, but that taught me to be conservative with those things. I recently made a vegetarian loaf (like a meat loaf) that my husband did not care for, but I think it was due to the fact that he put bbq sauce on it and expected it to taste like meatloaf. I didn't like it with bbq either, but I had made a Dijon Cream sauce that was delicious on it.
