I seem to have a stock pile of onions of all varieties.  So, I tried my hand at my husband's favorite, French Onion soup.I merged a few AllRecipes recipes into one that seemed to work ok:chop onion and saute in about half a stick of butter and a bit of veg. oil (to stop it from burning too… MORE

No one in my house will eat cauliflower in any form that I have presented so far, and the fact that this particular cauliflower is yellow is not helping its chances. So, tonight I am going to try making a soup.  A cheesy one.  This is the cauliflower's only chance, and it is a slim one… MORE

I wanted to make a sort of pumpkin soup for this weekend but I have every kind of squash from my last few farm boxes except pumpkin.  I used two other orange-fleshed varieties (a smallish butternut and what I think was a delicata squash - it had the right shape but the outside was bright… MORE

When we got these little peppers my husband immediately recognized them from the tapas restaurants in Barcelona, from a vacation there nearly 7 years ago now.I simply put them whole, in a pan with a little oil (something with a higher smoke point, so not olive oil), and basically fried them… MORE

Woo hoo!  BK (before kids) my husband was really into growing his own peppers and he also tried his hand at these.  We lived in So Cal, so had a much better growing climate than we do now.  He was pretty good at the peppers (and ten years later we still have remnants dried and in… MORE

Sorry for the long hiatus.  I just returned from a conference/meeting (for work) in Portland, Oregon.  I love Portland.  I got so much inspiration from the restaurants downtown.  Lots of them featured local, or at least Oregonian, sourced foods, and lots of organic too.I… MORE

I sort of accidentally made a recipe last night that I really liked, and it was even better today for lunch.  I had a small amount of little squashes that looked more or less like zucchini, some more, some less.  Since it was a small amount, they were destined to become a side… MORE

I had never heard of a fava bean before they showed up in my box and upon seeing them for the first time, I was not at all sure what they were or what to do with them.  My husband, of course, went with the stereotypical quote from 'Silence of the Lambs'...something about fava beans and… MORE

About Me
I am an over-committed working Mom with two very active kids and an equally over-commmitted hubby. I am interested in eating "in" more, eating more healthy foods, and growing our own foods as a family that is in a hurry all the time.
My favorite things to cook
I recently joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) to encourage myself to cook new things, and to get my whole family to eat new things. The fact that the food is organic, and I got them to add my place of employment as the drop off spot, is a bonus. I really enjoy the challenge of figuring out what to do with the new leafy green thing that showed up this week! I had to start a blog here (called What's In The Box) to help myself to remember what I do with the stuff.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love baking with my kids at the holidays. However, I am not a great baker. I can do pies and cakes. I am not so good at pastries or even cookies. I think this has to do with my impatient nature.
My cooking triumphs
My baking is improving steadily and my cake decorating is becoming a passion. Even my eight-year old son now likes this, thanks to the TV program "Ace of Cakes" where they make Star Wars and Army helicopter cakes.
My cooking tragedies
Too much experimentation and short-cutting has led to too many unhappy endings to list here!
