About this Cook
I love to cook. I have been cooking since I was old enough to stand on the kitchen chair next to my mom, who was one of the all time great cooks. She grew up during the depression and could feed a family of 4 on very little with enough left over for the next nights meal. She would prepare the left overs so that you would never know they were left overs from the night before. I sure miss my moms cooking.
My favorite things to cook
Anything new. I love to try new recipes. I will fix them per the recipes, then try it again and tweek it to how I like it.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas!! Every Christmas rather than go to the store and buy gifts, I buy pretty baskets and fill them with cookies and candy. I made 32 different cookies and candies last year. I finish the basket off with cookie mix in a jar, just add wet ingredients, a can of Hersheys to make hot chocolate and a gift card to get milk.
My cooking triumphs
I was asked to do the company picnic's food. Food for 100 plus friends of friends about 150 in all. It took me 2 weeks and a rented freezer, but the day of the picnic went by like I had done that sort of thing all of my life. That Monday my employer called me into his office and asked me if I wanted to go into business catering food. I have been asked to do the company picnic every year since.
My cooking tragedies
I had the flu, the kind that you hurt all over and want to sleep all of the time. I still had a husband and kids to feed. I put a roast on, went to my room closed the door to "take a nap". When the fire department woke me up, the house was FULL of black smoke from where the roast had went dry. My door was closed so I had no idea. After the fans had been removed, the fireman said, "Now that is what you call burnt offerings!" That was my favorite pan, I have never found one that I like better.
