About this Cook
I'm a 57 year woman with a 30 year life partner and a 37 year old son who lives in Montreal. We all love cooking have found food a wonderful way to learn about another culture. I've found that the first words of a new language that I remember are words connected to eating and trying the local cuisine is a great way to find common ground. My favourite comfort food and the food I couldn't survive without is plain (balkan style) yoghurt.
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy making the ingredients that are ingredients...the bread starter, the tomato sauce, the vegetable broth, spice blends, pasta, yoghurt and soft cheese. I very rarely eat meat I love vegetarian recipes from India especially Masala Dosas'and egg hoppers with a fresh mint coriander chutney. Everytime I travel to a new place I buy a cookbook and if I can I'll bring back some of the local ingredients, Vanilla from Costa Rica, hot sauce from Jamaica cardamon and other spices from Mombai.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up in New Westminster, B.C.,my grandmother had an acre in Richmond (Lulu Island) which supplied the whole family with fresh vegetables and fruit which was canned, frozen made into delicious jam, sauces etc..
My cooking triumphs
I made an angel food cake with brown sugar and whole wheat flour. I followed the recipe exactly beating it by hand for the exact time (or strokes) plus half again. Everyone told me it wouldn't work but we were on a small island and it was a special request. It was the best cake I have ever made, and still is. Also the first time I made bread with my own starter.
My cooking tragedies
The most disappointing result in the kitchen has been my ongoing efforts to make the Indian sweet Burfi and milk cake, both are similar to fudge, however mine turns out like cardamon soup.

Valentino's Pizza Crust
Very simple, delicious recipe. Sprinkled sesame seed on the counter and placed the dough on top, using oiled hands I made a 6" diameter round (I have a pizza pan with the holes, if I had a stone or a solid pan this could be done on it). I used white cheddar, garlic, hot banana pepper and mango for the topping, it was excellent and the hour it took to put together was no longer than it takes the local pizza place to deliver. Thank you!

Gooey Butter Cake IV
I had never baked, or eaten anything like this "cake" before so I had no expectations. I love it and so does everyone who has had some. I had ghee (clarified butter) on hand so I used that in the "goo" the third time and what a wonderful flavor. Thank-you for a wonderful addition to my "something special" collection.
