I'm a mother of five with finicky taste. Needless to say, we are on a budget and cheap, easy dinners are a must. That usually puts us in a rut as to what meats we can get, and I'm always looking for new things to make and new ways to make the staples of our diet. I work full time or more and so does my husband, which also leaves us short on time for preperations. We are adventourous eaters, but the kids are hard to please, so I'm ready for something tasty that they will love.
My favorite things to cook
I LOVE beef, especially steaks, ribs and brisket. We like chicken, and sord of like pork, if it's done in a different way- we have gotten burnt out on the usual ways to cook it. Seafood is great, especially shrimp, catfish (not technically seafood), crabs, scallops, etc. We are also starch lovers- rice and potatoes mostly. All in all, our taste is well rounded, but we are bored with the same old way of fixing things.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family was raised on southern food like chicken fried steak and fried chicken, ham with creamy new potatoes and corn, corn bread and dinner rolls. I used to love cooking with my mom and grandma and tried to learn all I could from them.
My cooking triumphs
Chicken fried steak, spaghetti, mashed potatoes, mushroom porkchops on a bed of rice,
My cooking tragedies
My grandma's creamy red potatoes- I just can't fix them the way she did. I have to cheat and it still doesn't taste quite like it. Home made gravy- I don't know what it is, I just can't do it without burning it or havinf it taste like flour. Thank god for the packaged gravy...lol!
