I have many hobbies, crocheting, reading, music, gardening, but cooking is my passion. I like trying new recipes and both my husband and my mother are my tasters. I am the mother of three daughters, grandmother of seven, great grandmother of three, have been married 20 years and I love my life.
My favorite things to cook
I like baking. I like one pot meals like stews, jambalaya, soups, gumbos, etc. I love Italian food but my husband prefers Southern soul food, we both love Cajun. I am of Hispanic heritiage, so I love cooking foods from the caribbean, especially Puerto Rician food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We love Thangsgiving dinner, but I believe my favorite is our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. I make it in the old Puerto Rican way, passed down:
roasted fresh picnic pork shoulder (pernil), yellow rice with pigeon peas, a Puerto Rican tamale (pasteles) and traditional island eggnog (cocito).
My cooking triumphs
My family and friends love my cheesecake, which I make the old New York style and I like making different variations. When I make my pork stew there are never any left-overs. When the purple hull peas come in season from our garden my husband is ready for Southern style peas and corn bread.
My cooking tragedies
I have never been able to conquer biscuits. I am talking about Southern style homemade biscuits. My biscuits can be used for frisbies. I buy frozen for my husband, for I don't like them. I bake good bread, be it white, French, Italian or dinner rolls.
