I am an 18-year-old girl living in wet western Washington State. I am the daughter of an excellent cook, but a not-so-great teacher. As a consequence, my cooking skills are a little...lacking. My passion for food, however, is not. I love to eat. Everything. I am not picky, and pretty adventurous when it comes to food. To date, the only food I have found I dislike is brie cheese. My favorite food is sushi. I have to admit cooking and eating are not my favorite hobbies. I mostly watch television. My very long list of favorite shows includes: Bones, House, How I Met Your Mother, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Tru Blood, Eureka, Weeds, Big Bang Theory, Fringe, Samantha Who, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Greys Anatomy, Eli Stone and Private Practice. I also love to read and write. My favorite authors are Kathy Reichs and Terry Pratchett. I have a large majority of my stories posted at fictionpress.com/~disturbedkittenwriter .
My favorite things to cook
Cookies! I have come up with an excellent recipe for snickerdoodles (which are almost always eaten up by my family within hours of being made and get their magic from a tremendous amount of butter). I also love to pan fry a chicken breast in butter, then add a splash of soy sauce and sesame oil.
My favorite family cooking traditions
For thanksgiving dinner, I am usually in charge of the jell-o salads and green bean casserole. My dad tends to the turkey. For christmas and easter, the same thing applies, except that my father makes ham for easter and prime rib for christmas. Oh, and I am usually the one who makes the deviled eggs (my secret is lots of mustard and garlic salt).
My cooking triumphs
I am the jell-o queen in my house. For some reason, my mother was born with an inability to make any jell-o set right. I have come up with numerous jell-o salads in the past, but very few of those recipes will be posted here because I usually just threw things together with what I had at the time. I also manage garlic and chicken pastas quite well and have done a few successful cream sauces.
My cooking tragedies
I have mangled quite a few fried eggs, burnt some toast, and turned out a couple loose jell-o salads but I am usually very careful with my important meals/desserts and so I have never had a huge cooking catastrophe. I did try to make brittle once and ended up with a sort of crumbly praline, but I sot of knew that wouldn't turn out (candy making is difficult and in the Washington humidity near impossible for a cooking beginner like me). I am glad to say I have never lit the house on fire or poisoned my family.
