Food was one of my first loves. Unfortunately, I was always better at eating than cooking. I am slowly rectifying this. I am married to a wonderfully dorky man who, even though food is 'not as important' to him as it is to me, is always willing to try everything I make...even when it's clearly an oven or stove-top tragedy. I'm also the mother of adorable 2 year old twin boys. I want to find more recipes and have them become our own family's dishes that my kids will remember long after they leave home.
My favorite things to cook
Sweets are okay, but I love, love, love savory foods. I also like to make dishes that remind me of my childhood, especially German and Filipino dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorites are Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with all the side dishes and, if I'm lucky, many of my family members together. We're scattered all over the world so getting together is very special.
My cooking triumphs
After a few tries, I was finally able to make three German dishes that actually tasted just like they do back home: pork schnitzel, Zwiebelkuchen, and warm potato salad.
My cooking tragedies
Most recently, not being a skilled baker, I attempted to make a birthday cake for my husband. I tried to free the cake from the pan, and to my horror, it ended up in three jagged pieces and still partially attached to the pan. I patched it back together with massive amounts of vanilla frosting and coated it with whipped topping and sprinkles. It was okay to look at, but once you cut into it you could see the disaster it actually was.
