About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
Salads, soups, pasta dishes, steaks, burgers, pork chops and chicken. Desserts including pies (cherry, apple, lemon meringue, chocolate meringue and pecan) and cobblers.
My cooking triumphs
As a child, I watched my mother making dough for pie crusts and apple dumplings. She never used a recipe and never used measuring spoons or measuring cups. I wanted to know the exact measurements but she never wrote anything down. So when I started baking, I tried to use cookbook recipes, but they never came out as good as my mom's. I kept trying and trying until I finally came up with my own personal pie crust recipe, which I think is foolproof. That was over 30 years ago. So now, every time my husband and I go out to eat and we order pie, he always compares the restaurant's pie crust to mine, and he always says mine is the best!
My cooking tragedies
It's funny now, looking back, but at the time it was a cooking disaster! I cooked a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner, the whole works - turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, rolls & butter, and pumpkin pie. Just before my family was going to sit down to dinner, I was finishing up in the kitchen... making the gravy. I decided to "cut corners" (wrong!). I used one of those handy Tupperware shakers, put some HOT drippings in it and then added flour. One shake later, the lid BLEW off and it went all over my cabinets, all over the ceiling, and in my hair! I was young! Chalk it up to lack of gravy-making experience. I laugh now, but I was devastated at the time! :-)
