Chocolate Spoons for Holiday Gift Giving

I was purchasing some Godiva hot chocolate for my exchange giftee (lisaj) when I saw chocolate spoons at the store. I thought it was a great idea to give with hot chocolate and I knew I could make some at home that were better than the ones in the store that were on black plastic spoons with crusty marshmallows.

I tempered my milk chocolate for these spoons. I first reserved a small handful of chocolate which I chopped into smaller pieces and set aside. Next, I began melting the chocolate in the mircowave just until the chocolate began to melt. I stirred the chopped pieces of chocolate I reserved into the melted chocolate which is called seeding. I kept stirring for several minutes as the chocolate began to cool. You can use a thermometer and look up the proper temperatures, but I am able to temper chocolate visually because I have done this many times by now. I also test it before using by dropping a small amount onto wax paper. It if it properly tempered, it will dry and harden completely within a couple of minutes or less. If you are interested in learning more about tempering chocolate, you can look it up. There are resources which explain it much better than I can.

I think these will make excellent gifts for this holiday season and I plan to make more after this great first experience. You can use any color of plastic spoon, which I love!

For packaging, I used the Wilton pretzel rod bags and put one spoon into each bag and I sealed with a sticker. You could also use a ribbon to tie the bag closed in place of stickers.

That's a good stocking stuffer idea! I like the versatility - you could make some with marshmallows like you said, or caramel maybe, or you could dye white chocolate to make them more festive. My sister would probably eat them just off the spoon, so I'd dip hers in crushed M&Ms or something like that :)

Yes, you can really be creative with these. I like to match my packaging to the person or event, so I like being able to use different colored spoons, ribbon, or themed stickers. For the holidays, I am thinking silver snowflake sticker or elegant snowflake ribbon. You could also press a couple of fresh marshmallows onto them. I piped some white chocolate across some of mine. Have fun with it and enjoy!

And I'm the lucky person who got the spoons! They look great and if they taste anything like the chocolate covered peanut butter eggs they came with, they taste divine! Thanks Kelly!

Thanks Luvs2Bake for adding the coffee suggestion. I am not a coffee drinker, so I didn't know! :)

Very CUTE! I have a question.... I've always hardened my chocolate w/ a bit of melted cooking WAX, isnt that the same-ish? It seems much easier than the tempering & hardens w/ in seconds. I cater but dont bake much or make much candy except at Christmas. THX for sharing the cute idea!!

I love this idea...do you let them harden on wax paper or hang up so there is not a flat spot on the bottom?

Nov. 18, 2009 10:18 am
I let them dry on wax paper. The bottoms are flat, but with tempering the chocolate, it doesn't really pool around the bottom at all. You can use wax with chocolate to help them set, but I prefer tempering, especially when I am giving it as a gift.

I love to bake and cook but this idea is new to me so please excuse if this sounds like a silly question but what are the spoons used for? Is it just for stirring and adding flavor to whatever beverage you want. I think they are pretty and would like to try them. I've never done candy before so is tempering chocolate difficult? thanks for the help, I'd really like to try this.

The chocolate spoons can be used to stir and add flavor to hot chocolate or coffee. You can do a search on how to temper chocolate. AllRecipes also have instructions on how to temper chocolate. I think it can be a little tricky, but after you conquer it, it gets easier. The most difficult part I had with it, is that I could temper and it would harden properly, but I would get a fat oir sugar bloom. I find that stirring it constantly after seeding really help to prevent that from happening. I hope this helps!

Hi. I'm new to this site and so far I am really enjoying it. I have a quick question for anyone to answer, please. Since it appears to be diffuclt at first to temper chocolate, why not use the Wilton candy melts or almond bark? Is there a draw back in using these. The candy melts come in quite a few colors and flavors. One of mine is the Chocolate Mint. Any advice? Thank you and Happy Holidays!

My grandchildren love chocolate! I give these without all the mess. They think I'm the best for making them for them!

Shari, you can use Wilton candy melts. The difference is that they are not real chocolate, they are compound coatings. Here is a link that helps to explain chocolate that I enjoy: http://www.the-chocolate-spot.com/types-of-chocolate.html

About Me
I am a stay at home mom to our three year old daughter, Alexa. I have a great husband and a precious cat named Haylee. I love taking care of my home and my family. I am very much into natural health and medicine, but I bake and eat a lot of sweets! I grew up on a farm in Iowa and now I am very much at home in San Diego.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking a wide variety of cookies, cakes and candies, that is my specialty. I also love making homemade cheesy broccoli soup, baked ziti, cheddar cheese fondue and macaroni and cheese.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My toddler daughter loves to help me bake. I remember watching my mother bake when I grew up and she instilled that passion to bake in me. I am thinking that my daughter will turn out the same way. She has her own apron, mini baking sheets, cookie cutters and she helps me each and every time I bake.
My cooking triumphs
I tempered chocolate and I also made soft caramels, I consider those my triumphs at the moment.
My cooking tragedies
I have been trying to make candy from scratch. I failed several times at trying to make the fondant for candy and truffle centers, I decided to put my candymaking book away for a while. I have made caramel from scratch, but I still need to work at getting the right consistency so I can wrap them or dip them in chocolate.
