Gourmet Caramel Apple Season

If you haven't noticed by now some stores are receiving their fall and Halloween candy. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I can't resist warm apple crisp served with vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce dizzled on top or hot apple cider or fresh baked pumpkin bread with milk chocolate chips. One of my favorite things to make and eat are gourmet caramel apples.

I first saw gourmet caramel style apples at The Rocky Mountain candy store. They crowd the storefront window causing anyone who walks by to look at them, tempting you to come in and purchase one. They are covered in a variety of chocolate, candies and nuts.

Tonight, I am going to make a few caramel apples as a special treat with my daughter. My favorite finish on top of the caramel and milk chocolate wrapped layers is white chocolate melted with peanut butter, which I drizzle over the apple.

What is your favorite finish to a gourmet caramel apple?  Oreos? White chocolate? Nuts? Please share.

Your apples look so perfect. I think it could be a great little gift during the fall for teachers, neighbors, etc.

I should not have read this right before bed! Have you heard of Merkins Chocolate? It's a good one for what you do.

Aug. 19, 2009 9:03 pm
Yes, I have heard of that brand. They carry it at a cake and candy specialty store here in San Diego. I typically just use Hershey's milk chocolate chips which I temper or Baker's milk chocolate. I like to purchase everything I need at the military commissary because the prices are great there.

MSC,Those apples are Expensive!! As much as $20.00 for 1 apple! WOW! You are really doing a fine job! maybe you could make some extra Christmas $$. You have figured out how to keep the cost down and that is terrific! They look scrumptious! Me, I would probably go with a chocolate covered apple. Shocking, I know! hahaha

I LOVE CARAMEL APPLES! My favorite one from Rocky Mountain Choc. Factory is, the Apple Pie one. It's coated in the caramel and then rolled in a concoction of brown sugar, graham cracker crumbs, cinnamon, and then drizzled with white chocolate. OMG, to die for. I'm so ready for fall.

Aug. 19, 2009 9:38 pm
Avon, the apple pie caramel apple sounds delicious. I recently went to that store while in the Denver Aiport between flights. I would like to expand and make different kinds like they do.

Oh, I'm so excited about Fall, the temperatures, the cooking. Seems to start the whirlwind of holiday cooking and baking for me, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, January birthdays, Valentines.... whew, it's gonna be fun! One of my favorite cool weather treats is warmed apple cider with red hots for a sweet cinnamon taste. For a group, I keep it all warm in a crock pot. My favorite caramel apple is plain caramel!! I know, boring, but I'm a bit of a purist. Your apples are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Your apples look delic! Thanks for a great idea!Keep them coming!

Aug. 20, 2009 1:15 pm
Oh, those apples look so good! I want one, lol. Mmmmm, I would finish mine off with milk or dark chocolate and maybe a drizzle of peanut butter. They'd look pretty rolled in toasted (or not toasted) dried coconut too. :)

Aug. 20, 2009 5:29 pm
I love caramel apples-the ones w/white chocolate are very pretty, but I think some dark chocolate over the caramel would be yummy.

You are s-o-o-o making me hungry!!

Aug. 20, 2009 7:38 pm
I think I really want to try a caramel and milk chocolate covered apple rolled in oreos and drizzled with white chocolate next. I never made and tasted one like that before. I also saw a rocky road gourmet caramel apple. Maybe I will make a goal of making several combinations this year? The caramel is really soft, by the way. I already ate one today and I am going to be cutting into a second one tonight while I watch my television shows!

Aug. 20, 2009 8:04 pm
Those are gorgeous! Maybe my kids would eat apples if I rolled them in caramel and Oreos! LOL

Aug. 20, 2009 8:06 pm
Hi Kelly! I make gourmet apples all the time and all different flavors. The oreo one is a favorite as well as a reese cup one that I make. I have pics. posted in my photos of my toffee chip explosion one if your interested. Avon, I'm gonna have to expierement w/ the apple pie one...sounds delicious! :)

Aug. 20, 2009 11:30 pm
i made some apples for some kids i knew a few years ago for halloween, they turned out so good!, i took granny smith apples and dipped them in caramel, then dipped them in melted dark chocolate leaving some of the caramel showing at the top then i went to milk chocolate leaving some of the dark showing and finally i dipped the bottom in white chocolate and let it dry, OMG that one was so good! i also did some with milk or white chocolate rolled in candy and crushed oreos. there's a store up near gatlinburg, TN that sells candy and honey, they have caramel apples in there with all different kinds of chocolate on them rolled in salted mixed nuts, now they are good!

Aug. 20, 2009 11:30 pm
Hey Christina, I will check out your photos. I am assuming that the Oreo apples can't sit around long otherwise I cookie will become stale. Tell me more about the Reese's cup one.....sounds delicious!

Aug. 20, 2009 11:32 pm
I ate half of the M&M one tonight and I was surpised that it was tasty with the M&M's on it. Deebos, the tri-dipped chocolate apple you described sounds wonderful, thanks for the great idea!

Aug. 21, 2009 5:11 am
Kelly, I do the caramel/chocolate thing, then I put chopped reese cups (all over) and drizzle with milk, white, and dark chocolate, (sometimes peanut butter chocolate too). You can also add chopped peanuts if you like. They are VERY yummy! Also, if you keep the apple covered, the oreos don't get stale too fast. :)

Aug. 21, 2009 8:12 am
Crushed pretzels! Apples rarely last long enough in this house to do candy apples. If there's an ounce of caramel sauce somebody is cutting up an apple and dunking it. I like your white chocolate and PB!!

Aug. 21, 2009 8:51 am
I love pecans or walnuts after the caramel apple is dipped or drizzled with milk and dark chocolate. Nummy ^__^

Aug. 21, 2009 11:47 am
I made more of them today. I always give my friends them this time of the year for a special treat, so my friend wanted one with just caramel and milk chocolate. I have two other waiting to be dipped in chocolate, so I will try something new with those thanks to the suggestions I got on here. I will take photos and let everyone know what I decide to do with them. :)

We sell caramel apples here at the sweet shoppe and one of our tricks is adding some white chocolate to the caramel itself while melting it! It gives it a rich, creamy flavor. Right now we don't offer any of the gourmet varieties, because the shoppe is just getting started, but we plan to have all the fancy apples in the near future. My favorite apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is called the Avalanche, but I couldn't even BEGIN to tell you what all is on that thing! It's got caramel, a couple kinds of chocolate, nuts, mini chocolate chips, and probably a whole bunch of other stuff. The coating is at least an inch thick before you even get to the apple skin LOL!

MSC,those apples are lovely! I'm eating them with my eyes! I'm so excited for fall weather and baking and fireplaces!

Aug. 21, 2009 3:32 pm
Love these can you share how you made your caramel?

Aug. 21, 2009 3:53 pm
I use the Kraft unwrapped caramel pellets and I melt them with a tablespoon or two of milk or you can use water in place of milk too.

Your apples look so yummy! My husband and I make these for our annual chili and bonfire night, except ours end up with a puddle of caramel at the bottom. Can you share any tips to prevent this?

Aug. 21, 2009 4:30 pm
Apples are coated with wax, so you need to dip the apples into boiling water for a few seconds and take a paper towel and wipe the apples really well to get the melted wax off, otherwise the caramel will slide off and not stick to the apple. I hope this helps! :)

Aug. 21, 2009 6:34 pm
MSC - your apples look beautiful! I can't wait to try to make some later this month! My favorite is dipped in caramel, then milk chocolate and rolled in a thick layer of peanuts. YUMMM

I've been wanting to make these for sooo long! The pictures are mouth watering! The peanut butter sounds delish! How do you make peanut butter glaze to go on these? Thanks for the tip for dipping them in boiling water!

Aug. 22, 2009 11:54 am
Ohhh. I want to make some this fall.

Aug. 22, 2009 1:19 pm
I take a handful of white chocolate chips or I use one or two Baker's white chocolate squares and I melt them in the microwave with a tablespoon or so of peanut butter and I stir until it is melted together and has a smooth consistancy. ;)

These look wonderful! Great job. When you make dipped apples how long are they typically good for? Is there a way to make them last longer? Thanks and again beautiful job.

Aug. 22, 2009 1:32 pm
MSC...You've inspired me to attempt these beautiful apples. May sound silly, but do you have to let the caramel sit and set awhile before adding chocolate or any other layers? How long? What kind of apples do you use? Thank you!!!

They are beautiful! I pick way too many apples every September...maybe I'll attempt to dip some for a nice change, instead of so many pies and muffins. :)

what kind of chocolate is used for these? I know some people melt down chocolate chips. any help would be appreciated. They look awsome!!

Now I know why my caramel slides off! I thought I just hadn't found a good recipe yet. Thanks for sharing!

These are really beautiful. I'm so excited to try making some myself this autumn.

Haven't thought about making these since my kids were little. Sounds like a lovely, gourmet treat to give as a gift.We live near Apple Hill in northern California and get many varieties fresh, ie no wax. Have you tried using the bulk caramel (think it can be purchased in a 5# box, or our candy store parcels it into 1# pkg)? With horrid arthritis not sure if peeling all those caramels would put me out of commission for weeks. Do you let the apples cool at room temp for a period of time/refrig to decrease the stickiness of the caramel? Thanks for a lovely inspiration. pc---another baker/dessert maker

Aug. 22, 2009 10:41 pm
I use room temp. apples and they don't sit very long before I dip them into milk chocolate. Sometimes I let them sit on the counter for 10-20 minutes and sometimes I put them in the fridge for a few minutes before dipping them into chocolate. I prefer to use tempered chocolate, but I have been making them mostly for myself, so I haven't tempered it and I just refrigerate between eating them. I mainly use Hershey's brand milk chocolate chips. I try to use the caramel pellets so I don't spend 10 minutes unwrapping caramels. I haven't purchased any caramel bulk, but I would like to use a homemade caramel recipe for dipping apples sometime this fall. I appreciate all of the comments and questions ~ MSC :)

Aug. 22, 2009 11:13 pm
I used fuji and braeburn apples, although I prefer the fuji and another kind that I can't think of at the moment.

These sound like they would be fantastic to try with honeycrisp apples too. I've only ever seen them available in the fall, but they are lovely. Crisp, super juicy and sweet- tart.

Your creations are stunning. When I get my braces off I am heading straight a store up here in Toronto that makes them with Granny Smith apples. I have been craving a caramel apple for 2 years! My favourite is caramel with toasted pecans and a touch of dark chocolate - it's like an apples wrapped in Turtles.

Aug. 23, 2009 1:56 pm
Yes! Thank you! Honeycrisp apples are the other kind I love to use, but the commissary didn't have those in yet, so I will stick to the fuji until then.

tysvm, mysweetcretions! they will definitely be my fall and probably christmas "go to" easy peasy gift. with the bulk caramel, abundant apples, and eager neighbor children, we will have a blast as well.

I just wanna say your caramel apples are beautiful!.. :)

MSC - I too love caramel apples, but I've always been too afraid to try to make them myself. Thanks for the great tips because I think I will give it a try this year. Caramel apples rolled in nuts are my favorite, so I will start with that one.

Hi. those apples are nice :) I been making caramel apples for a little while, i usually use just chocolate almond bark for the chocolate coating. always works wonders for me. thanks

Hi MSC.. I'm a couple of days late, but wanted to tell you that the apples look amazing! As usual! You always inspire me to try new things! You made a cake a while back with Marshmallow Fondant, and it made me want to try it.. and now I can't wait to try these apples. Thanks for all the helpful tips :)

Aug. 25, 2009 9:58 am
Brook, Oh! Believe me, you inspire me to try recipes you have made from your photos! I added the cream cheese cookie cups because of your photo and I voted for your gorgeous zebra cupcakes! Wow! ;)

MSC, You are toooo kind! Thank you so much :)

Aug. 29, 2009 8:46 pm
MSC, I made these tonight and they turned out well! I just covered mine with colorful sprinkles. :) What do you think about white chocolate with crushed peppermint for Christmas apples?

Aug. 30, 2009 12:44 pm
I saw your photo on the voting page this morning and voted for it! White chocolate with peppermint would make a beautiful looking apple for Christmas with a matching ribbon tied to the stick. You can also buy peppermint oil at specialty baking store to mix with the chocolate too.

Aug. 30, 2009 6:15 pm
Thanks so much! I'd never thought of peppermint oil. That's a great idea!

Aug. 31, 2009 6:27 am
MSC just for curiosity, but have you thought about selling these gourmet apples?

Aug. 31, 2009 8:20 am
I have, if I lived in Iowa (where I am originally from) I would like to be part of the farmer's market and I would sell things like this. Right now, I am not sure how I would sell them. I make and give these to my friends in the fall for a special treat. Maybe sometimes in the future, but I haven't figured it out. :)

Aug. 31, 2009 12:42 pm
That would be great, I would buy some! :)

Your review of cheesecake is on the popup advertising right now. I'm trying to find which cheesecake recipe you tried, but can't find it. Do you remember which cheesecake you liked so much? Your dessert photos are always so good, so I figure you know a lot about baking desserts. TIA!

So excited: found my 5# bulk caramel yesterday with cello bags. Unsure if the bags would fit the lovely large size apples with coatings, but would be far easier than a big square of cello.

Sep. 6, 2009 9:02 am
PC, I was able to find some smaller sized fuji apples that were good compared to the regular and large ones that I see. When do you plan on making them? :)

Sep. 6, 2009 9:06 am
Tree, it was the "Chocolate Cookie Cheesecake." It is a full 5 star rated recipe and I just made it twice last month. It was actually the first time I ever made a real, baked cheesecake and it was delicious. I finally bought a springform pan and I made them in Iowa while visiting my family. I highly recommend trying that recipe. You have to refrigerate it overnight, so it is hard for me to wait that long, but my mom and I had the cheesecake for breakfast the next day and the day after that.....

Sep. 6, 2009 9:29 am
thanks for the response. Your dessert pictures are always SO perfect, I knew you'd be the one to ask for a recipe. cheers!

Sep. 6, 2009 2:34 pm
Thanks, but I don't think my photos are that great. I started taking the photos a year ago and I just look at others photos on here that look great and try to figure it out. There are some people with exceptional photos. I hope you enjoy the cheesecake, it was delicious!

Sep. 10, 2009 3:39 pm
OHH yummy ... I,v always wanted to make those but never had the chance .......... :) i'll be there in a couple minutes . (;

Sep. 15, 2009 8:22 pm
Some suggested trying Oreos on them, so tonight, I tried it! I may have found a new favorite. I did caramel and milk chocolate covered fuji apple covered with crushed (fine) Oreos and drizzled with white chocolate melted with peanut butter.

msc, thanks for such inspiration! recently (early for apples here in CA) I've found small fist-size apples. they won't be as spectacular but better for my waistline, lol, and great for a first try. will make them one week when i have a few gf around and/or hubbies are busy/out of town. those are fun kitchen experiment days :) as far as cheesecakes, I'm no expert but easy peasy once you get the technique down. my holiday gifting used to be about variety of cookies, baskets, etc. now tis finding one recipe i make a quantity of at one time (killer low-fat,low-sugar pumpkin bread, rum cakes, choc. pb cups, cheesecakes,and....this year: caramel apples :) even with two 27" ovens, i just churn them out. the bowls that could cross-contaminate do get washed with warm water and plenty of soap, but to get >20 done and the kitchen cleaned in one day is a beautiful feeling.

Sep. 29, 2009 8:32 am
Those look like heaven on earth! i am going to have to make some with my sisters some time! i think rocky mountains are so good! Theres one at a shopping center in my city and i saw them make them fresh! They smelled so delish!

Oct. 2, 2009 7:18 pm
April, mmmmmm.....I hope you try them soon. They make great treats. I like to cut mine up and have them as a snack when I watch television at night.

Oct. 11, 2009 1:34 pm
Thank you so much for guiding me to your blog here! I am truely inspired to do something fun with my apples. Thinking carmel dip then the peanut butter and milk chocolate drizzle! Love the idea of graham crackers too, oh boy! Good thing I bought a huge bag of apples, may do a bunch of different kinds, thanks again!

my daughter is a school teacher & getting married so I thought of making these for the wedding favors. Can they be made up a week in advance?

Nov. 24, 2009 7:43 pm
You could make the caramel apples a couple of days in advance. You could probably drizzle white, dark, and milk chocolate over them intstead of dipped if they are wedding favors. They have smaller apples available in the grocery now, I have been buying Fuji apples. They have a small, petite apple and then a regular full sized apple. Don't forget the tie a beautiful ribbon around each stick!

About Me
I am a stay at home mom to our three year old daughter, Alexa. I have a great husband and a precious cat named Haylee. I love taking care of my home and my family. I am very much into natural health and medicine, but I bake and eat a lot of sweets! I grew up on a farm in Iowa and now I am very much at home in San Diego.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking a wide variety of cookies, cakes and candies, that is my specialty. I also love making homemade cheesy broccoli soup, baked ziti, cheddar cheese fondue and macaroni and cheese.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My toddler daughter loves to help me bake. I remember watching my mother bake when I grew up and she instilled that passion to bake in me. I am thinking that my daughter will turn out the same way. She has her own apron, mini baking sheets, cookie cutters and she helps me each and every time I bake.
My cooking triumphs
I tempered chocolate and I also made soft caramels, I consider those my triumphs at the moment.
My cooking tragedies
I have been trying to make candy from scratch. I failed several times at trying to make the fondant for candy and truffle centers, I decided to put my candymaking book away for a while. I have made caramel from scratch, but I still need to work at getting the right consistency so I can wrap them or dip them in chocolate.
