Fourth of July Patriotic Cake

I volunteered to bring the sweets to a Fourth of July backyard barbeque/swim party. I recently found a small, locally owned cake specialty store in San Diego called, "Do It With Icing." While browsing their large selection of unique cookie cutters, I came across one shaped like the United States. I knew I was going to make the "Best Rolled Sugar Cookies" from this site for the party, so I just had to buy this cookie cutter.

You know I can never bring just one dessert! I recently had my first experience with fondant and I liked working with it. I decided I would make a white cake with a buttercream center and iced in buttercream, then cover it with fondant. I used the Wilton whitening product for icing to color the majority of the fondant white and I also used the no-taste red and navy blue Wilton colors to color the rest. I used my star cookie cutter to make the large stars for the cake.

The cake and the "matching" cookies as someone said, were a huge hit at the party and we had a blast swimming and eating that afternoon.

Did you induldge in any sweets during your Fourth of July celebrations? If so, what?

The fondant is truly easy to make and work with, it is similar to Play-Doh. I picked up the rolled out fondant to drape over the cake and I was a little off and there was a tear on one side, but fondant is great because I would use one of the stars to cover it up. You take the lefover fondant and roll balls and place them around the bottom for a border. I was very intimidated for a long time until I decided to just go for it one day.

I was the same with the fondant. You just have to jump in with both feet. Your creations look wonderful!

Very festive stuff, Kelly! No sweets here - I don't care for them and my husband needs to get his glucose level down. (It's driving the poor man nutso!)

Hey Deb, as much as I love sweets, I need to start making some real healthy food soon. I admore those on hear who can make great dinners for their family most or every night of the week. Those who do that inspire me to be a better cook. ;)

So pretty! Sometime soon I am going to try a fondant-covered cake. On the 4th, we had apple pie, lemon meringue pie, and those hamburger cupcakes made with brownie "hamburgers".

Isabella, the pies you had sound great! Maybe I should try baking a pie next......lemon merinque sounds kinda good.

Kelli, just curious but what recipe do you use for your cake?

Everything looks great! I've never worked with fondant but would love to. I watched "Cake Boss" this weekend and saw that they sprayed cake after decorating with spray bottle-did you do this?

Wow, your sweet creations for the 4th look great! I voted for a few of them. Glad to hear your family had a nice 4th celebration and that everyone enjoyed your spectactular desserts. Job well done!

I used Betty Crocker white cake mix, it is my favorite white cake to use. I don't spray the cake, but I dabbed some water on the back of the star to help fix them to the cake so they don't move or slide.

You are so talented! I wish I had the time to spend making beautiful desserts and dishes. One day again, once my baby boy gets older, then my daughter, son and I can play with cookie dough in the kitchen!!!!!

I think I'm going to try the Best Rolled Sugar Cookies recipe this coming August to make some cute cutout cookies for my daughter's birthday. I like the photo someone did where they put the cookies on a stick and put them into a little flower pot. That was just so cute!

HoneyKitten, how old is your baby? My daughter is three, so it is easier for me now. I was completely out of commission the first year and a half of her life because I was always holding her a lot. Once she took an interest in toys and was able to move arounf by herself I have been free and she likes to play by herself or help me now. Cookies on a stick are a cute idea. Make sure you get the Wilton cookie sticks at your local craft store because they are substantial enough to support the weight of the cookie. The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies recipe is an easy one and it is really tasty too! Good luck, thanks for stopping by my blog. :)

Your food photography is as good as your cookies and cakes "appear" to taste. You have a real flair for presentation in decorating and in the pics. Looks good enough to eat, I would buy your cookbook, do you have one yet?

Ha ha! I wouldn't say my photography is that great, there are so many others who take wonderful photos on here, but I learned by looking at other pictures on here. If you look at some of my first photos I submitted, I was taking them indoors and/or at night. I learned by look at others photos is it about lighting, the dishes you present on and the angle of the photo. It is just a hobby to bake, take photos, and share them on AllRecipes.com, maybe even an addiction!

My son is 6 months old and my daughter will be 3 years old next month, August. She loves to help me in the kitchen, but sometimes helps make more of a mess hehe. Ah, the fun and joy of cooking with a toddler. I know what you mean about being out of commission with a young child, my son has just learned to crawl and is using his newly found power to follow me around the house to beg me to pick him up. :-)

On and thanks for the Wilton stick suggestion! I'll have to drop by my local Micheal's and see if I can find them there.

Michaels will have the cookie sticks.

Hey i tried fondant and it came out bad. :( can someone give me a really good and simple fondant recipe please!

Since you've expermimented with fondant and the sugar cookie icing recipe, I'm hoping you can give me advice. I am making an cake shaped like an oreo cookie & want a big glass of milk "cake" next to it. How do I make the "milk" cake look like a shiny glass? Thinking either rolled buttercream, but wondered about simply covering with the sugar cookie recipe. I've never made fondant or rolled buttercream. Your advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I believe a lot of people prefer marshmallow fondant because it is more user-freindly and the ingredients are very basic. Some people get the very shiny appearance by using light steam or very lightly rubbing Criso/vegetable oil onto it. I personally use butter when working my fondant.

The sugar cookie icing is great for sugar cookies. You can spread it around the cookie by using a Wilton paintbrush or a cheese or butter knife which doesn't have the edge on it, they are smooth on all side. Depending on the cookie detail, I use either one of those tools to spread the icing. It takes some time to spread the icing on each cookie and they need to lay out to dry overnight.

About Me
I am a stay at home mom to our three year old daughter, Alexa. I have a great husband and a precious cat named Haylee. I love taking care of my home and my family. I am very much into natural health and medicine, but I bake and eat a lot of sweets! I grew up on a farm in Iowa and now I am very much at home in San Diego.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking a wide variety of cookies, cakes and candies, that is my specialty. I also love making homemade cheesy broccoli soup, baked ziti, cheddar cheese fondue and macaroni and cheese.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My toddler daughter loves to help me bake. I remember watching my mother bake when I grew up and she instilled that passion to bake in me. I am thinking that my daughter will turn out the same way. She has her own apron, mini baking sheets, cookie cutters and she helps me each and every time I bake.
My cooking triumphs
I tempered chocolate and I also made soft caramels, I consider those my triumphs at the moment.
My cooking tragedies
I have been trying to make candy from scratch. I failed several times at trying to make the fondant for candy and truffle centers, I decided to put my candymaking book away for a while. I have made caramel from scratch, but I still need to work at getting the right consistency so I can wrap them or dip them in chocolate.
