I'm still a beginning cook, but I love it, especially baking. I'm still not very good at cooking without a recipe, but I learn something new every time I make a new dish! Since I love trying new things, I rarely make the same dish more than once or twice -- so I usually read multiple reviews and, based on reviews that make sense to me, I make a few changes to each recipe I try.
My favorite things to cook
cookies/bars, muffins & quick breads, cakes, pies, appetizers, entreés (especially skillet dishes), do smoothies count? ;-) I really enjoy making fun-looking food, though I'm better at making tasty but not-so-beautiful things.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My dad's waffles, latkes at Hanukkah, matzo ball soup at Passover, and my mom's amazing chocolate cake for birthdays! And my absolute favorite has to be pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving and during the Winter Holidays.
My cooking triumphs
3 different cakes in one day! :-) Basically everything that I don't fail at is a triumph to me... haha... My most triumphant so far was making Father's Day dinner in 2009 for my dad. I made Slammin' Salmon, Creamy Twice-Baked Potatoes, and Asparagus Tossed Salad. My dad said it was more creative and just as tasty as going out to a restaurant - and he meant it. I somehow managed to time the whole meal pretty well, which is usually a problem for me.
My cooking tragedies
Baking brownies with a friend, when I was even more of a beginner... she said one-half cup of oil, but I heard one-and-a-half cups of oil. Let's just say those brownies were not really edible. x-P -- I have also failed at fudge twice - the first time making World's Best Peanut Butter Fudge from AR, I somehow forgot to let it cook for 5 minutes and it turned out tasty but too soft. The second was making regular chocolate fudge, when I thought I did everything correctly but it turned out extremely gooey. (It made a fantastic hot fudge sauce for ice cream though!)
