About this Cook
I'm a college student attending The University of Georgia who really likes food. I'm not the type of girl who could ever skip a meal (ask my boyfriend, who's dealt with my hunger moodiness more than once). I am only beginning to really learn techniques and flavors, but I'm an eager learner! I'm studying Health Promotions and Behaviors at UGA and hope to go on to Physician Assistant's school. I'm very close to my mom and have wonderful friends. Hopefully I'll be able to share some great recipes of my own.
My favorite things to cook
I love savory foods. Some people fall for the cakes and cookies, others want salty or sour, I love hearty, starchy, creamy foods. Mushrooms, potatoes, pastas, cheese . . . if it's good in the fall it's probably good any time of year for me. I especially enjoy Southwestern, Mexican, and Mediterranean flavors.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom makes the best marbled brownies and makes egg rolls on the grill! My family is the type that always has something fabulous to eat during gatherings. A new great bottle of wine, a specialty cheese someone's cousin recommended, a new recipe Grandma's trying out. We have ham on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's and our palette is very Southern.
My cooking triumphs
I make terrific phyllo-wrapped spinach triangles and stuffed mushrooms, and I'm not too bad at mashed potatoes either.
My cooking tragedies
My first attempt at zucchini bread . . . sucked. It was horrible (thought don't tell my former roommate that, her smugness when it comes to baking is really too much to bear). It was my first big baking attempt. The chocolate wasn't melted enough and there was too much of it, and I made the mistake of throwing flaxseeds in, which ruined the texture. Ah well, you cook and you learn, right?

Bread Bowls
I used part whole wheat flour and part all-purpose, and that seemed to make my bowls a little chewy and not so smooth. And I only made four bowls because of the reviews, which was way too much bread. Eight would've been too small, I should have stuck with six. It was an okay recipe. Nothing to knock your socks off. The bread was kind of bland.

Thai Basil Rolls with Hoisin-Peanut Sauce
Only tried the peanut sauce, and it was delicious! Had to up the peanut butter to about 2 tablespoons because the peanut butter I used was extremely chunky (used smart balance). After tasting, I decided to add about a tablespoon of Korean chili paste because I wanted a spicy sauce. Came out just right for me. Used it over a sauteed eggplant dish with thai basil served on nice noodles. The rolls sound great, but I was making a quick lunch. Maybe another time? (Also, whomever got huffy thinking the poster was parading this as a 'Thai' recipe needs to learn a little more about food. The recipe only included the word 'Thai' to refer to the variety of basil used. And thank goodness, because such a different flavor would come out if you used Italian basil instead!)

Dutch Apple Loaf
This was a very tasty, but not mind-blowing recipe, though the folks I served it to at a recent bake sale thought it was phenomenal. To me it missed just a little something, and tasted more cake-like I might have preferred. Definitely would use brown sugar for the topping next time. Will cook again for bake sale and others, not sure if I loved it so much that I'll cook it for myself (not big on sweets for the most part). Thank you for posting anyways!
