I'm a 26 year old health coach living in San Diego with my soon-to-be husband. I survived college on microwave popcorn, bags of frozen broccoli and cartons of ice cream. It's probably an understatement to say that I'm new to cooking; however, I love the challenge as a celiac, which means I'm gluten intolerant (I cannot eat anything containing wheat, barley or rye), not to mention the fact that my boyfriend cannot eat any nuts, seeds or raw vegetables. I guess you could say we have a few cooking "hurdles" to navigate.
My favorite things to cook
I make a mean grilled cheese! I've always loved cooking for others, especially baking desserts: layer cakes with extra icing, double chocolate chip brownies, and good old fashioned Rice Krispy treats. These days, I'm a gluten intolerant health nut who spends more time perfecting the spinach omelet, being creative with oatmeal and concocting fruit and yogurt desserts.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am eating in most of my childhood pictures and it's hard to pick just one favorite memory or meal. My Nana's individual-sized lemon meringue pies... making "crunch cake" with mom... inventing pumpkin pie milkshakes in high school... making enormous quantities of boxed mac 'n cheese with my brother for family get-togethers.
My cooking triumphs
Anything I make that's toasty, cheesy, gooey, creamy, sweet and not burned is a triumph in my book!
My cooking tragedies
In college, I fell asleep while waiting for a pot of noodles to boil and awoke to the horrible stench of a solidified, smoking, burned mass. The pot was ruined, my place stunk for days, and I suppose I was lucky that I didn't burn down the building!
