About this Cook
Proud Nana
My favorite things to cook
Spaghetti, Meatloaf, Mac and Cheese. I love making "Comfort Foods".
My favorite family cooking traditions
Big Sunday breakfast. During the week everyone had different schedules so we settled for cold cereal or oatmeal. But on Sunday we got the works. Eggs, sausage with gravy, home fries, grits and homemade biscuits. The same was true for Sunday dinner. It was the only day that we had dessert. Home made cakes or pies. Especially banana pudding made with vanilla wafers.
My cooking triumphs
Macaroni and Cheese, must use eggs to get that special flavor that I love. It doesn't matter what I make, if it's all eaten then it is a triumph to me. I felt great the first time I made lasagna and also the first time I made German Chocolate Cake from scratch.
My cooking tragedies
Accidentally leaving out some key ingredients when trying to make a recipe from memory (before the days of internet easy access). I once made beef liver and it turned out great. I like liver but I can't stand to see it when it is raw. Whenever my Mom made liver I had to stay clear of the kitchen until it was done or I couldn't bring myself to eat it.

The Best Chicken Soup Ever
Excellent! Used what I had on hand (daughter and grandson both have colds with fevers). I used 4 chicken leg quarters, added some mixed veggies--didn't have any pasta so I threw in the macaroni from a boxed mac & cheese. Also used chicken soup base since I didn't have the chicken soup mix.

Dad's Hamburger Gravy
Great flavor! Didn't make as written. Was making frozen hamburer patties and wanted more than just a burger and fries so I cooked the burgers then followed the rest of the recipe to make gravy. Served with cheesy bacon potatoes from this site. Next time I will follow the recipe, I'm sure we'll love it!

Bacon Cheese Potatoes
Very good. Accidentally left out onion (I usually put onion in EVERYTHING!), left out olives on purpose. Instead of mayo use 1/2 cup margarine and 1/2 cup sour cream. Also added some shredded cheddar on top in addition to the american cheese I mixed in.
