I'm 22 years old and in a long-term relationship with a wonderful man and hearty eater! I grew up in the midwest but moved to the south when I was 17. I never realized just how different food can be from area to area! I love it!
My favorite things to cook
Anything that tastes good.
I'm not much of a sweets person...more carbs for me. So I really enjoy cooking Italian and German (love meat & potatoes)food. I've been eating spicy food since I was a child so anything Mexican, Cajun, or Southwestern really hits the spot!
My favorite family cooking traditions
For christmas eve my mom always makes her homemade gingerbread cookies and eggnog. Then we sit around and decorate them together.
On Thanksgiving, as long as I can remember, we always would get a little plate together and set it out on the back step or outside somewhere. It was just our way of showing our gratitude for everything that we had. In a sense a way of giving a little back to Mother Earth and her other inhabitants that made the meal possible.
Also during the week, to make things interesting, my mom would give each of us four kids a day and we would get to choose what we wanted to have for supper. Usually we would choose foods from different ethnic backgrounds. If she didn't know how to make it, she found out and then showed us how. It really jumpstarted my love of cooking.
My cooking triumphs
I acquired this recipe in high school from a friend called White Chili. Over the years I've altered this recipe quite a bit and have found it to always be a hit! I've made large crockpots full to the brim and still found that it didn't last longer than three days! And that's with 3 people. I even caught a guest at my house warming up a bowl! Chili so good people steal it!!!!
My cooking tragedies
I was babysitting my younger siblings one weekend morning and was in charge of cooking breakfast. One of our favorites was Cornmeal Mush, a quick hot cereal that my mom makes. I decided to cheer up my siblings by making it green....but in my attempt to make things interesting I let the cornmeal lump up. I was left with a green lumpy mess. Needless to say...they refused to eat it and went with cereal instead.
