My favorite things to cook
I love to bake so any recipe that looks like it will be delicous I will try. Pretty much anything with blueberries in it is a winner for me. I love to try new recipes and then see how I can make them my own. I typically will try the recipe as is the first time to see what if anything I would like to do differently. I'm cooking for young children and a husband that will pretty much eat anything so I love finding recipes that will allow my kids to try new foods and expose their palates to new flavors.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Coming from a very large family the only cooking tradition I really remember is my mom successfully having a meal made for us every night! Now that I have kids and they have their own busy schedules I really appreciate what my mom was able to do. I did love New Year's Eve though. My mom would always make it special for us when we were young. Lots of fun appetizers and lime sherbet mixed with 7-UP in a punch bowl as our special drink. Very good memories.
My cooking triumphs
Making a Thanksgiving turkey that was moist and delicous. I don't like to deal with raw meat much, especially meat that has to be cleaned like a turkey. I didn't know all that was involved and was pretty grosssed out by the whole ordeal. My husband ended up cleaning it thankfully. I brined it overnight and in the morning gave it a bit of seasoning and slathered it with olive oil and butter. Then decided that I would place a whole stick of butter under the skin on top of the turkey. It was amazingly moist and so delicous. My family is still asking how I got it to turn out so well.
My cooking tragedies
My husband still likes to remind me of my first attempt at making cheese soup. I had not done much cooking on my own at this point and thought I would attempt to make this wonderful soup we had at a local restaurant. I didn't have a recipe for it but was just sure I could re-create it! I diced the veggies, added the spices and seasonings that I thought should be in there and added this all to chicken stock. I then added all the cheddar cheese at once that I had grated...it turned into a big ball of "flubber" as my husband and his roomate liked to call it. I will never live this down even though my husband now loves most everything I make. I have since then successfully made a good cheese soup.
