About this Cook
I am a retired school administrator and teacher. One year I had the daughter of a fellow teacher in my class and as a reward for completing an assignment I gave a group of students including that daughter a batch of cookies. A few years later when I was the principal I baked cookies for my teachers including that former fellow teacher. She thanked me and said, "I see you are stressed out because you're baking cookies again." This got me to thinking that I actually do bake when I'm stressed. Baking and cooking are great stress relievers and everyone benefits.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake cookies, pies, cakes, scones, biscotti and muffins. Once a week for a whole year I baked for my ladies golf group. Many of the recipes came from "allrecipies". A favorite was the cinnamon, white chocolate scones. I also like to create new recipes using all meats, especially seafoods.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every Christmas I pull out my mother and grandmother's old-time seasonal recipes. Baking those old foods such as the whiskey cookies, the surprise cookies with the mint wafers inside and a huge walnut outside, pralines, divinity and old-fashioned fudge (without the marshmallow cream) bring me closer to those family members who have long since left this earth.
My cooking triumphs
Currently my bunco lunches are a big hit with the eleven other ladies who come to roll dice and eat. Other triumphs include theme parties such as my Cajun feasts. Always my "White Chocolate Bread Pudding" with Bailey's Irish Cream/White Chocolate Sauce is a huge hit. This recipe came out of the now defunct "Houston Post" years ago.
My cooking tragedies
My cooking tragedies become family lore; for example preparing green grits for Saint Patrick's day - not too good looking going in, frightening coming out the next day. This year my grandkids were coming for Easter, so smart grandma that I am, I boiled the eggs to dye ahead of time. When the time came to dye the eggs and we had prepared the dies and laid all the equipment out, I placed the bowl of eggs in the middle of the preparations and everyone became silent and just stared including myself. ALL THE EGGS THAT I HAD BOILED WERE BROWN EGGS! What fun we had creating new, not so attractive colors. They weren't hard to find, either, when we hid them the next day.
