I am a 70 year old widow living alone now for over 10 years. I have my lovely poodle Vicky to keep me company and am enjoying my "new life" very much indeed.
I had trouble cooking for one at first and find the recipes in AllRecipes great because they allow me to downsize a recipe to one or two servings. I have been experimenting a bit myself with single serving meals and have come up with a few that work very well for me.
My favorite things to cook
I love stir frys and slow cooker meals. Probably because they are so easy to put together. Of course the slow cooker meals have to be ones that I can freeze in single serving sizes!
My family of five boys and a hungry husband had me looking for tasty meals that could keep warm for ages to accomodate all those swimming lessons, football and soccer games and after-school activities. I now prefer those simple meals that I can put together in a half hour or so with as little clean-up as possible!
My favorite family cooking traditions
One tradition that comes to mind so often still is "Butterscotch Sundays", so named because some Sundays would be set aside for making sweet yeast breads and rolls. The smell throughout the house of hot rolls and sweet brown sugar was a favourite time, even though the time was also set aside to clean the recreation room! At least those five boys had something to work for.
My cooking triumphs
Connecticutt Beef Dinner, my "Wonderful Spaghetti Sauce" (so named by my boys), Beef Bourguignon, Grandma's Shortbreads and those aforementioned butterscotch rolls and Chelsea buns, I make a pretty good Chili as well
My cooking tragedies
Don't ask! I remember "creating" my first (and last!) deep fried donuts. When my husband came home from work he tried to get his teeth into them...nearly broke them and then decided that they were best heaved off our 6th floor balcony into Lake Ontario! Worst part of this was pouring the hot oil back into a glass bottle, which of course blew up and sprayed oil all over my kitchen.....cooking time and clean up.....8 hours!
Another sad one was my first Thanksgiving turkey dinner. I mixed the bread crumbs seasonings, chopped onion, celery...all those lovely ingredients but didn't know that I was supposed to add liquids to the bread crumbs. When I opened the turkey to spoon out the dressing it kind of "puffed" out like a duststorm...I just stood there and broke out bawling. Oh dear!! Such a long time ago...sigh...by the way now I am noted for my delicious stuffing!
