About this Cook
I cook for many reasons: out of necessity (we gotta eat!), to save money(restaurants really add up) but also because I enjoy putting a good meal on the table that my family enjoys. I believe in having a family dinner as often as possible, which in our case is most nights. This site has been truly a god-send to me....I love trying new things, I love being able to search for recipes based upon ingredients I have on hand, and I love the collaboration between cooks, as reflected in the reviews each recipe receives. Just a wonderful resource which makes my life a bit easier.
My favorite things to cook
I have a wicked sweet tooth, so my favorite things are brownies, pies, cookies, breads, etc. I guess if I could spend my life eating three meals a day of these things, it would make me pretty happy. And fat. That's why I try not to.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love making, and decorating, Christmas cookies with my kids and neighbors. I also love making Thanksgiving dinner for family and friends.
My cooking triumphs
A triumph can happen on any average day. When my husband AND my boys say they love what I've made for dinner and ask for more, that's a triumph for me. I try to bask in it!
My cooking tragedies
Nothing terribly tragic stands out, although tragedy to me is throwing away something that I've made that no one will finish up the leftovers of (I try to compost it if I can :).

Mocha Nut Butter Balls
Made these for Christmas. I was looking for a chocolate russian tea cake-type of cookie, and tried these. I made the following minor adjustments, after reading the reviews: to increase the coffee flavor, I used 3 Starbucks Via packets (their very strong instant coffee). There is no missing the coffee flavor now, and if anything it might be a little too strong. Next time I bake these, I'll use 2 Via packets. I also chopped the nuts then briefly toasted them in the oven on a baking sheet (5 minutes or so) to improve their flavor. I think it really helped. Other than that, I followed the recipe exactly. I would have liked my cookies to be a bit more spherical....they flattened out during baking, even after I refrigeraged them for 20 minutes prior to baking. Perhaps next time I'll increase the flour just slightly. The flavor is good, and for chocolate and coffee lovers it's perfect. This is not a cookie that, say, children would like (unless the child is my coffee loving 13 year old!) because of the strong coffee flavor, but I think most adults will enjoy the balance of coffee and nuts. Also, the confectioners sugar really balances the slightly bitter coffee taste perfectly. I think I would call the flavor of these cookies, "sophisticated".

Clone of a Cinnabon
I thought these cinnamon rolls were easy to make, and the results were so professional that my hubby, who wasn't home when I made them, expressed doubt that I had made them myself. (As in, "did you REALLY make these yourself?") They came together quickly - I used the 'dough' setting on my bread machine. I followed the recipe exactly. Quantities were perfect. It made a dozen big, gooey rolls that, once rise time was allowed for, baked quickly! The biggest part of the time allowance is in rise time. Actual making/dough handling time is quite minimal. A great snow-day treat for the kids.

Pesto Chicken Florentine
This was good but not great. I willingly admit to not following the recipe especially closely. I used a jar of Classico 4 cheese alfredo and mixed in 4 frozen cubes (small) of home-made pesto. I substituted cubed turkey for chicken, because it's what I had in the freezer. Like I said, it was good, but not great. It WAS very simple and fast to make, however....by the time the penne was cooked, the sauce was ready, so literally dinner was made in about 15 minutes. Not bad but if I try it again, I'll use chicken instead of the turkey.
