About this Cook
I am a busy (who's not?) mom and 5th grade teacher who enjoys cooking and especially enjoys baking, but doesn't get to do it often enough. When I have time on the weekend, I'll plan a menu for the week since that saves so much time weekday evenings and also saves money. These days our menus are filled with quick dinners like tacos, pasta, salad & soup, etc., but I like to mix it up with new stuff when possible.
My favorite things to cook
A special cheesecake from the Gooey Desserts book. Most any baked dessert item.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Ham/pineapple/cheese/english muffin under the broiler for breakfast. Completely homemade pizza (sauce, dough, etc.) which we sometimes eat twice a week. My mother-in-law's sherried beef. Mom's many Dutch/Indonesian recipes. Chocoladehagel on toast for breakfast. Smoked Gouda (correctly pronounced "how-duh", not "goo-duh").
My cooking triumphs
See special cheesecake from the Gooey Desserts book above. :) Also, my husband and I cooked a holiday meal to remember for a large group of family members last year.
My cooking tragedies
Not too many and I don't actually have any cooking horror stories. I did recently try a pumpkin cheesecake from this web site, and while I think the flavor was okay, it was a bit too soft and prompted my sometimes foot-in-the-mouth father-in-law to say his slice/pile looked like something he saw out on the dog trail that morning. Yuck! Everyone was appalled at the comment, and even though I knew he was trying to be funny, I was insulted and mad the dessert hadn't turned out perfectly.

Roasted Winter Squash Seeds
I actually like these (Butternut) better than roasted pumpkin seeds. They were lighter, crispier and super yummy.

Italian Breaded Pork Chops
Crispy, tasty chops! A great alternative to our usual Shake-n-Bake. I followed modifications suggested by others and they turned out perfectly.

Best Cream Of Broccoli Soup
Yum! I followed suggestions to mash instead of puree, to use a sweet yellow onion, and to substitute butter for the margarine. I had no chicken broth, so used beef broth instead, plus a pinch of salt. The soup was really flavorful and had a nice texture. We get a lot of broccoli in our CSA veggie box, so I'm sure this will become a favorite recipe!
