Love cooking, reading recipes, cookbooks, all mags w/ new food ideas! Cookbooks of all kinds. I actually go to thrift stores for old cookbooks! I have a "Someone's in the kitchen w/ Dinah" (Shore) cookbook, and one from back when the old settlers came here. Some recipes have Abe Lincoln's sisters recipes in it!
My favorite things to cook
New recipes that I find, I love to make mexican food the most. I also like trying new things w/ chicken, potatoes, and rice. The more flavor, the better!
My favorite family cooking traditions
As a wee child, my grandma use to let me make a "cake" on her kitchen floor with just flour, sugar, and water, sometimes cornflakes. I would mix it all together in a big glass pyrex bowl and she would put it in the oven and tell me to go out and play while it baked. Imagine my suprise that the "cake" came out round, frosted and ready to eat when I came in from playing. She had the one she had made sitting in the oven when I came in! I thought that was so neat! I didn't figure it out till I was 7!
Also always had 4th of July dinner at my Great Grama Susies', all family and I loved the way she made her corn w/ milk! I miss that! Thanksgiving at Autie Julias', more like family reunion time! Everyone brought a dish, and all enjoyed!
My cooking triumphs
I have alot, maybe my family is just grateful that I cooked! LOL!! I made ribs one time, not really knowing what I was doing. Boiled them w/ seasoning in an 18 Qt roaster for several hours, drained and washed the mess, then turned up on high and cooked & added bbq sauce last 1/2 hr before done! They acted like I opened the pearly gates! There's lot more, I know my oldest lil' brother did tell my Mom I was a better cook than her, & my mother agreed! But I still love her cooking! It has the taste of love in it!
My cooking tragedies
Burnt a no bake cheesecake! How you ask? Didn't read directions to "melt butter" b/4 adding to crumbs, so I just put it in a pan to melt butter, what did I get? Burnt crumbs! Had good filling though, in parfait glasses topped w/ berries! LOL! Oh! Burnt the kitchen up when I was 12 making french fries! I do not fry w/ oil EVER to this day! EVER! You want fried, got to KFC, MCD or Burger King! It ain't happening in my kitchen!
