About this Cook
Full time worker and mom to 2 sous chefs. More likely to create something from ingredients I have on hand than to go out and buy special ingredients for a particular recipe. Trying to grow more food in our garden and buy from local farms as much as possible.
My favorite things to cook
At the moment, anything involving root vegetables. We got a winter share from a local CSA so I am finding fun things to do with beets, celeriac, rutabaga, etc.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving at our house. Birthdays--always make cakes and a special dinner. West African foods like fried plantains, peanut butter sauce, zame, akara, fonio and ginger juice.
My cooking triumphs
Roasted vegetables from this site--one of those small, everyday triumphs. Learned the technique from the recipe and have been adapting ingredients ever since.
My cooking tragedies
Slow cooker root vegetable tagine from this site--I overdid the spices and it was inedible....and I usually eat everything I make no matter how bad it is!

Apple Chutney
I halved the recipe. I put 1 whole cardamom pod and about 10 white peppercorns in a tea ball and buried it under the apples. Used red wine vinegar, and Cortland apples which held their shape. This was delicious with our Thanksgiving meal, and wonderful with leftovers. Could be good as a dessert with some local ginger ice cream....will not be waiting until next Thanksgiving to make again!

Baba Ghanoush
I follow the recipe's oven roasting directions and it always turns out delicious. But I am curious about one reviewer's stovetop technique and will try that next time.

Mimi's Smoked Salmon Chowder
I used this recipe for the basic idea and technique. Added diced carrots with the celery/onion/garlic, did not have chicken broth but added some dried fish powder, used canned salmon, skim milk instead of 1/2 and 1/2 and accidentally used a little too much hot sauce. It was delicious, warming and filling and I am enjoying the leftovers. I am sure it would be outstanding with smoked salmon and creamier with 1/2 and 1/2.
